I run 285s on a 4in Rough Country Suspension lift and was recommended to change my gear ratio. I'm not really that familiar with how to go about finding the best ratio or if my stock gearing is okay for that size and height. Not doing it for mpg just so I dont overwork my transmission or differentials. Any advice is welcomed

If you’re gonna stick with 285s most would recommend 4.88s but if you plan to upsize go with 5.29s.
I have neither but plan on doing it eventually.
You can find mega threads on here for both gear ratios.

There isn’t an infinite number of choices, so it’s pretty easy. The gear manufacturers have to consider space inside the diff and the standard teeth profiles they have the machinery to cut. They can only do so much within those limitations.

For Toyota Tacoma’s 4.88 is an extremely common choice for 33”s (285’s). Larger than that and some guys run 5.29’s.

Your speedo and odometer won’t be affect by a gear change in these trucks because the speed is calculated at the wheel hub not the diff or transmission

I'm running 4.88's on my Taco which has 285/75/17's (~34" tires). Where I'm am in Colorado, Climbing the big hills in the mountains is still a little bit of a struggle. If I'm going anywheres from 60-70mph the truck is crying in 3rd gear at super high RPM's (forces you to shift at just over 70mph). So I either need to drive insanely fast, or slower than most others. But on normal roads it rides just fine. It goes down the highway at 70-80mph in 6th gear again, finally. I also added about 300lbs in racks, skids, drawers etc. I don't plan on going any bigger with tires, which is why I stuck to 4.88 as well. It's really on the fence but it depends on what types of roads you'll be driving
