It gets like that here from time to time. Pretty expensive place to live so no one really moves here just on a whim. And unemployment is low so if you need to hire someone youre scraping the bottom of the barrel. in the pre-2008 crash years it was REALLY scary....lots of places (including my former emoloyer) was left to hire through a temp service just to keep enough bodies on the floor and keep production moving long. that meant we were usually getting a new batch of parolees every couple of weeks. but they'd screw up and end up violating parole and a new one would get shipped to us. freaking scary. i kept a pretty low profile at work and tried to get out of there every night before they all left for fear of one of them following me home or some shit.

I keep this by the front door. It sprays out a stream, not a mist. It is quite effective on spiders so I imagine it would work on a human too although I've never tried.

The only time I've ever been vulnerable was several years ago...
I had just gotten home, was out at the movies or something. Dark out. Pulled into my drive and came up the stairs. I was just about to put my key in the lock when I heard a guy right behind me say "well, hey there sweetheart" kinda sorta slurred. Pretty sure my heart stopped for a second there. I somehow flicked my keys so that I had a key sticking out from between each finger and brought my arm up, ready to start swinging. I turned around I said "I'm not your fucking sweetheart and you need to leave right now". He about fell over backwards trying to get down the steps. I was relieved he was leaving as I was pretty much cornered with him blocking the stairs. As soon as he got to the bottom of my stairs I unlocked my door and got inside. Relocked and grabbed the phone, ready to dial 911. He got into a car parked across the street and drove out of view. I do live on a block with a lot of identical buildings so I'm pretty sure he had just been too drunk to pick the right house of whoever he was looking for but there is still that suspicion of 'maybe not' in the back of my head. Maybe he was just drunk and dumb, maybe I just got lucky and scared him away. I'm much more careful since - survey the block as I drive up, identify any cars that dont belong, do a quick sweep before I turn off the ignition and get out...

you are rite on track. we are using a temp service and hiring felons from a halfway house. the cars are lined up picking people up that have lost their drivers liscense. dont mean that in a bad way!some are good people and do good but most wont last long so more come in and train again. the guy i have hasnt had a liscense for years. he drives a moped.yes its a little scary weve had some incidents that we never had years ago.

Unfortunately you need to do things like that to be safe..
But you were prepared and didn’t hesitate. That puts them on the defensive..

there are a few good ones who are really trying...but the ratio of good to bad isn't promising.
    likely story o_O

I think he freaked out once he realized I wasn't who he thought I was. Like I said, I live in an area with a lot of identical buildings. eady to get mixed up.

police station is about 6 blocks away. small town, nothing much going on most days. but yeah, I get what you're saying.

yeah, you're not supposed to use bear spray on people either but if its the only thing available to me when i need to protect myself I'm not going to think twice about it.
