so, i did a search and found this:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/what-is-the-best-4x4-setting-for-sand.253317/

does that still hold true today? i would assume so.

the question is what mode of 4x4/options is best for deep sand driving?

I am assuming 4hi and vsc/trac fully off by pressing that switch for 5 seconds?

if it's anything like my 07 xterra 4x4. if you leave vsc on, it tries to stop the wheels from spinning which in sand, there is tons of spin going on.....

Depending on how deep the sand is, I sometimes like 4lo, which automatically turns off the vsc. I've definitely experienced bucking with 4 hi and traction control.. it's unpleasant. Especially with a manual, you're going to spin a little taking off.

Go out and try all the modes and see what works, somewhere recoverable, before you go for the crazy stuff far away.

I’m driving an automatic. I drive in 3rd gear on the beach. I also air down ~17 lbs.

where i am going in a month or 2 you can't get to besides a private paid vehicle ferry and it's all 4x4 over there. so yes, i need to play with the system some. just plain 4hi works there so assuming all things being equal, 4hi with the nannies off (push the vsc button for 5 seconds) and aired down to 18psi should be dandy. probably will take her out to the closer place next month to test it all out.

I’ve spent a couple days in the sand dunes, aired down to 18 psi on the stock Goodyear’s and never used 4lo. Some sandy areas may require 4lo but the only way to find out is to get there and do it.

If you do find yourself needing 4lo put the MTS in the 1st setting (which will allow the most slippage).

this is what i am looking for. i know how to drive in 4hi on the beach without nannies. i just don't know yet how to turn them off on this tacoma. sounds like the trac/vsc button hold till it lights up two lights is the way to go. i tried tonight in the hood and i think it's failry easy to remember.

Bring some recovery gear, a buddy with another truck, and get it lightly stuck so you can practice what works best now, instead of near dark way out there.
