No e-locker on my TRD badged 4x4. At some point in time Tacomas began
to have two TRD flavors, "sport" and "off road"... could it be that I have a "sport"?
Could it be that the previous owner put TRD stickers on it? The "Vehicle Specification Details"
I downloaded from Toyota with my VIN don't mention TRD anywhere...

Yup, from what I found almost every TRD model that I've looked at came with a locker

What exactly are we looking at here? It seems something has been welded inside your rear-end. Pardon the not knowing enough question - my curiosity get the better of me

Someone just added stickers. All first gen TRDs were TRD Offroads. TRD Sports came into existence with the second gen.

That's about 24 pounds of welding wire, lol. People sometimes weld their diffs rather than put a selectable locker in it. If you drive your truck on the street, this is a terrible thing to do, IMO. It's definitely cheaper than a locker, but selecable lockers are still preferred, even on trailer queens if you have the budget for it.

I've been driving vehicles with spools or welded diffs for many many years on the street with never an issue

Depends on what you mean by "issue". I'm not talking about reliability and breaking things. I'm talking purely about drivability. I personally think chirping your tires, jerking around corners, and an increased turning radius are "issues". My first gen has a big enough turning radius, I don't need to make it any bigger if I don't need to, lol.

My ‘01 factory locker still works like a charm. I use it a couple times a month pulling my boat out of the water at the lake... of course now that I mention that it works next time I go to the lake it’s not...

i wish i was connected to this TW forum in '98 or '99 when I first heard of this item ... I wanted that snazzy little orange button down there lol

while having my truck in for one of its early days maintenance I had inquired about getting this feature added and the benefits
i think it was something around $2k to maybe $3k to get it added on with a new axle, etc (i think)

then I found out it was not purposed for what I needed it to do

I wanted it as a limited-slip differential at any speed so I could keep in 2wd and not switch to 4wd in the winter or other slippery driving
I am extemeley skilled at rear wheel only driving and control in the snow, etc since my first two cars were used late 70s Toyota RWD and got loads of fun, excitiment, and practice keeping them back wheels and steering under control (although my passengers would totally freek out when I started fishtailing :D)

I thought it would be a nice feature to add to my truck but found out IT WON'T WORK AT SPEEDS > 5mph
