Just amazed with the perceived value of our trucks vs the value of these 3rd gen's.

We've taken in several 3rd gen Taco's over the last few years, everything from a base 4 cylinder to a TRD Pro and all models in between.

Yesterday we took in an '18 Sport with only 5k miles on it for what you'd spend on a new Altima.

At the same time, I've had multiple offers on my '01 with 240k miles for more than what I paid.

Now I understand all the negative threads in the 3rd gen section, a lot of people just don't like them :anonymous:

I have gotten multiple tempting offers on my 04 with 180k miles for above what I paid 5 years ago at 110,000k. Wild.

It's not a perceived value. It is real. These are good trucks, and people like them. If you can get one with no frame rust, people don't really care how many miles are on it.

The 2nd and 3rd gens are also after Toyota decided to try and overtake GM as the world's largest manufacturer, so quality was going to take a hit (quantity over quality)

The 1st and 3rd gen are two completely different trucks (both with pros & cons). If you want a super-reliable classic compact pickup a 1st gen Taco is the best choice hands down, therefore clean/rust free examples go for top dollar. New trucks are a dime a dozen.

To reiterate, "we" as in "our" dealership.

Not a Toyota dealership, but we own multiple franchises and we're family owned.

From time to time I go over and read in the 3rd gen section about all these issues current owners are having, only to hear some of those same issues echoed here as well. Other times, owners are just flat out disappointed with their vehicle.

We've taken in a lot of Tacoma's and considering people pay all the money for them, I'm sometimes surprised at the amount they'd take in on trade.

I've driven some of these 3rd gens just to test the waters, and even at a stupid low price, I wouldn't buy one myself.

you don't have to change that oil at the 1k mark?
I had mine changed as soon as I hit the 1k mark in '97

I am very worried about scratch and dents 2 decades later

i am still on the hunt for a snazzy new corolla hatchback (my current corolla on its deathbed)
the dealers salesguys keep approaching me in my truck cruising the lot wanting to know if I want to trade this in for new taco
I am half tempted to see what they gonna give me for it (out of curiousity)
in my area the very early 1st gens are not very common due to climate and whatnot (or else they are hiding in garages!)

Just like any gen. The older ones start dying out and become hard to find. Same thing will happen with Gen 2, same thing will happen with Gen 3.
