Tire Problems In Germany

Hey TW,

So yesterday I was driving some trails when my low tire pressure informed me that one was getting low. I ended up puncturing the side wall of my front passenger tire. Kevlar my ass! Made it home and switched out the spare and torque it down.

Got in contact with a local shop to see about getting a replacement and turns out that the tire isn't allowed to be ordered due to EU specs.

Been online trying to find somewhere that will deliver either to Germany or my APO but so far no luck.

Now I checked the manual and it says not to exceed 50 MPH/ 80KPH on the spare and use only for a temporary use. Seeing how this might take alittle to get a tire shipped out, what is considered temporary use? I looked over the tire and it seems to be the same just on a different wheel.

Will it be good to drive around for as long as it takes or should I just park the taco till the new tire or tires come in?

 

I’ve known folks who drove on a spare for quite a while. Keep it on the streets and not fast and it’ll be ok. Can you get some good AT tires there? I’d drop the stock tires in a hurry to be honest.

 

Looking into German AT tires might be my next approach but if I can go with American I rather. Switching out the stock was a plan for the future but I couldn't get myself to do it just yet. They have less then 5k on them lol

Looks like a full size spare pretty sure you can go over 50? I always see the 50mph rule on the donut tires

I have been pushing it to 60ishMPH /100KPH just cause it's a common speed limit out here but that what the manual said.

What kind of tire is it? I've been running Goodyear wrangler MTRs love them if you can deal with road noise

 

Just the stock 265/70R/16 Goodyear wrangler AT adventure

 

Drove 60 miles back and forth to work one day going around 75mph on a spare in the rear. Im still here.

 

I got about a 40 min drive to work and back but I just dont know how long I'll have to use the spare.

 

Youll be fine, but maybe take off early or a day off (idk how germany works sorry) but replace or repair as soon as humanly possible. The spare is meant to get you out of a bind, but its not a long term solution.

 

This is one of the very few times that I would say it's probably ok despite what the manual says. I'm guessing that the speed limit is written there either as a remnant copy/paste from a manual that uses the donut spare, or possibly because they didn't bother balancing the spare at the factory. The tire itself is capable of highway speeds, as is the cheap steelie.

The only real danger is if you happen to catch another flat, you're at the mercy of the tow truck.

 

Isn't the spare the exact same tire as stock? Could you have a shop swap that over to your oem wheel and roll with that?

 

Found these on Amazon.de might just have to get all new tires.
Now I just have to talk my wife into wheels

 

That's what I was thinking as well not sure how the same tire would be different.

 

People swap their TRD wheels out for those steelies as a full time setup all the time. Tire is the same as well. I think it is just a CYA thing.

 

One of my co workers brought this up and I thought it was a good idea.

 

I would swap the spare out to the alloy rim and buy a cheapo tire for the new spare, a lot less money spent
