I just replaced my clutch in my 99 tacoma 3.4 4x4. I only seem to have 2nd 4th and reverse. (The bottom 3) What should I be checking 1st?

The shifter won't go into the gears or when you are in those gears the truck doesn't move? Try the shifter bushing and seat. Just my .02.
Good luck and keep us posted.

The shifter will not go into 1st 3rd and 5th gears. It moves in 2nd 4th and reverse. I've been told check the pressure plate. A guy had a similar problem and he said it was because the bolts needed to be tighter than the 14lbs. spec. Was hoping I didnt have to take it all apart again. Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a shot!

Was it going into the gears before the clutch change? I'm thinking something got out of whack when you pulled the shift levers out to get the tranny out. Path of least resistance , the shifter bushing and seat would be the first to try. I would hate to see you pull the tranny out again only to have the same problem after you put it back in. Good luck!

I would guess that ifif goes into 1, 3, 5th then something other than the bushings are at fault. Buuuuut @gearcruncher is the local expert.

Gotta be in how the shifter was installed some thing is not correct .

If things were working before it was removed Unless you had a Transmission problem not the clutch

Most likely something got moved some how installing the transmission or shifter quite easy to do and not notice

Will the shifter go into 1st, 3rd, and 5th without the engine running? Does seem likely to be the shifter.

I agree, the shift lever is installed incorrectly. I had a similar problem when I put mine back together. Easy fix.

Just a long shot, could the engine and transmission mounts be bad? And when you removed the tranny and transfer case the mounts shifted to where the shifter hits the transmission tunnel hole for the shifter? Again, just a long shot.

I re installed the shifters both correctly. I haven't filled the tranny with fluid yet so I'm gonna drop it again and make sure the pressure plate is tight enough for everything to engage. And check that everything is installed right. Fingers crossed

I'm not seeing how the pressure plate would keep you from shifting into certain gears.

So you haven't started the truck yet to see if it will go into gear while running? Since the tranny is drained, did you try a little gear lube or grease in the shifter area? I remember when I put my short throw shifter kit in it was a little tough to put it in gear until I started my truck and it slung some gear oil around. Redline MT90 is some awesome stuff!

It will not go into 1st 3rd or 5th. Doesnt matter if it's running or not. Just will not engage them at all

You should be able to engage all of them without the engine running and the clutch engaged which doesn't make any sense for how it would be the pressure plate which is outside of the transmission housing.

Hey may have done something differently when he removed and installed the transmission the second time and assumed re-torquing the pressure plate is what fixed it. Without seeing what the problem was with visual confirmation (wear marks etc.) or a logical description of what was causing the interference with the pressure plate affecting the gear selection it was perceivably a guess.

I'm all for redoing a job to search for the issue, but the input shaft slides through the pressure plate and into the engine block and that's about it. Shifting gears is independent of that and could happen in or outside of the truck with the engine not spinning.
