They literally took a lexus car engine, intended for car... and put it in the tacoma with programing to adapt it to a truck application... 87 octane, lower redline, etc

I actually like knowing I share an engine with the IS 350, which is is a pretty bad ass sedan.

Also, I know there's threads on the topic - but I recently switched to premium fuel (91 octane), and there is an unmistakable increase in performance and slight increase in efficiency, especially on highways. Just my experience though.

I don’t but this “Truck motor / car motor” debate. It’s just BS. The “big three” have shared motors between trucks and cars for decades. It’s nothing new. It just sounds clever to say it, but in truth it’s absolutely meaningless.

...and the 3.5 is quicker than the 4.0 frontier in nearly all published acceleration tests:

    Frontier pro4X auto: 0-60mph in 7.3sec. 15.8 at 87.0 mph
Taco TRD OR auto: 0-60mph in 7.1 sec. 15.4 at 91.2 mph

That's generally what I've found as well. There's a TFL vid where they drag race a Tacoma pro vs a frontier pro 4x, the Nissan wins by about 1 length.

Then the guy in the taco shows his 0-60 time, 9.8 seconds. Holy smokes was he even racing?! I'm pretty sure my 4cyl can do that lol.

I've been running 91 pretty much since the purchase (Costco member). It definitely makes a difference, especially out of a hole. MPG's increased a tad too.

    Still stock completely capable!
Also have to remember TFL guys will tell you the gladiator is the best most reliable truck on the planet. I give them 0% credibility.

Don't fear the reaper! Nothing is going to happen. Regular oil changes, give the engine about 10 miles of a warmup, then let her rip. Italian tune ups does wonders for keeping contaminates out of the oil and intake and exhaust. I'll drive at 6k before I drive at 1k!

LOL tacoma doing 0-60 in 7.1.... right. What did they use a solo timer from Amazon that had water damage and stop timing at 36mph?

Here, frontier vs tacoma drag race:

I have owned both trucks the 4.0L VQ is stout.

All depends on the driver. And when I pulled away it wasn’t from a dig we were probably already moving 20mph.
