2016 OVTune Tacoma 3.5L Manual Transmission / Engine ECU Reflash

It would be nice if we could just get a true road tested MT tune......but then again it's only been two years maybe I'm expecting too much.

 

We have had seat time in the MT, we have even had them on the dyno, just not recently.

1. We have been working on the Tundra since January 2017 (check comments).. https://www.ovtuned.com/blogs/news/orangevirus-tuning-3ur-fe-5-7l-tundra-development this is not some all of a sudden thing.
2. Corolla is not even 5% of our total R/D time.
3. We have been doing lexus since 2016.

Are we not allowed to do anything new for our old platforms? Until Every new development for the Tacoma is 100% complete and released?
Our current MT tune is stable and provides what we have outlined for release.

 

No you are not quoting me wrong. We just have not had one on the dyno recently (2019). Some of the patch work that we are working on has to have the code done before we can even do seat or dyno time with the truck. This is the most time consuming portion.

Turbo is being worked on but that's completely separate to this stuff.

I don't think I have the right answer for you. If we dare to work on or develop for any other platform (even ones we did BEFORE the tacoma) we are ignoring the tacoma, and when we are working on the tacoma, it's not fast enough. The only answer I have is : Even though we are developing on other platforms, we are still working on our tacoma development just as much as we always have been. The Tacoma ECU is much more complex and time consuming than some of these others. So even though it may *seem* like they are getting more at a faster rate, this is not true. It's the simple fact that the development involved for them is significantly less than it is for the Tacoma.

To put it into perspective, the Tundra has 2 torque tables. The tacoma has 20. The Tundra has 2 ignition efficiency calc tables. The Tacoma has 66.

Don't get discouraged, Mat. By far the vast majority of us are grateful for the efforts in making our trucks the way that Toyota should have produced them in the first place. You have been far more successful than Toyota has been with all their resources in 3+ years. Getting ready to place my order.

 

Not going to lie, with all the time spent defending himself/his company, I'm concerned we're going to lose Mat to being sick and fucking tired of it.

 

It wouldn't be the first time he has taken a break from the forum. The idiots in the Alpha thread contributed to that one.

Mat, keep doing what you're doing. I'm anxious for the requests to be addressed, but taking the time to do it right is a good choice. I'll keep driving 1.05 around with a smile on my face!

What is the "FOB" option? I've searched, only returns are for the key fob.

I ran it for a quite a while, currently running the base tune to see how much difference there is. I like both of them, you really can't go wrong with either.

 

There's nothing wrong with discussion in here. As stated though, there's really no need to argue an opinion.. unless straight up falsehoods are being floated as fact.
Remember, some of our trucks DO have issues - and NO, it's not about unrealistic expectations. If you never had a stutter under load, well you wouldn't understand what the fuss is about.
As far as the M/T tune development - no one can really deny that MORE street testing would probably help solve some of the remaining stuff like blip delay weirdness. You have to feel that IMO.

 

What are you initial thoughts? I'm considering switching from 87 base to FOB for a road trip this weekend, not sure what to expekt. I'm woke.

 

YES! That was one of the biggest gripes I had with the stock tune.

 

It is what I run. I do 80 mile round trip to and from work each day. Some small hills but nothing that even requires a down shift from 6th. I have to slow down for 2 small towns with a few lights total. Right now I am running stock gears and tires and getting 22.7 to 23.2 MPG depending.
The throttle response is very nice. There is a bit rev hang. But, it is mostly noticeable when letting off to down shift. It is no worse than what is in the stock tune. It is only a minor distraction, and in no way should be construed as problematic.

 

You'll also appreciate how crisp the throttle is when taking off (stopped, clutch in). It's much better than stock. There's still a bit of inconsistency when rev-matching (for a downshift) but that's being looked at. May I also suggest you ditch the clutch accumulator if engagement feels off to you. It adds delay between your left foot and the slave cylinder. Mine just feels normal now, does what I tell it, when I tell it lol.

 

I wanted to know this as well, and was chatting with @tonered about it who has run both 87 FOB and base. He might have some input.

I am stock, so I can't really comment on the fat kids out there. Supposedly, the folks carrying a bit of extra weight say that it is great.

I liked the grunt (87 and 91 FOB), but it was difficult for me to deal with getting going in traffic or with other folks along. If I was alone, I could get rolling a bit more aggressively with no issues. So, I settled back on 87 Base. If the very bottom of FOB was a bit softer, I would be running it full time.

For sure, anyone grabbing the tune should spend two or three tanks trying out each tune. I've tried, in order, 87 FOB, 91 FOB with 92 octane, and 87 Base. All gave me 20.5mpg average. In fact, this was the first time that 92 octane matched the MPGs for regular, usually I lost MPGs / range. I tried it twice in the past (04B12 and 04B13) and lost MPGs with no other benefit other than some barely noticeable smoothness. Premium and OVT gets you a very smoooth power bump.
