Seems like 5.29 is one of the best routes to go. 4.88 is also solid. I want to do mine

I’ve got 4.88’s and I like em a lot. 34” tires and about a 2.5” lift. 5.29’s are recommended if you ever plan to go above 33’s, but the 4.88’s still work fine on my 34’s

It just looks like everyone that has done it loves it. I also saw a few videos of comparing their 4.88 gears and then saying wish they had done the 5.29 right off the bat. Nitro gear has a good video of their Tacoma they regeared to 5.29 bone stock.

On normal highway roads it no longer is searching for gears. It cruises down the road at 70mph in 6th gear happily. It feels exactly like it should from the factory. Although, In Colorado, if you're going up the mountains it's a different story. Just about every vehicle struggles to some degree up them regardless, but what I found was that with the 4.88's, is that it's actually a little more difficult to climb from 60ish to 70mph up the steep hills. The truck only produces enough torque to retain a constant speed above 4000 RPMs on the steep grades. So when you're going up them at 60-70mph, 4th gear is around 3500 RPMs and you find yourself constantly decelerating. However, if you shift to 3rd gear, your RPMs are though the roof and the truck forces you to shift back to 4th at 70mph because it's literally red-lining. It will still search for gears between 3rd/4th in that situation, but you can either solve it by going less than 60mph or above 73mph. Or, if your truck has the manual shifter, just stick in in 3rd gear and it solves all your issues.

Now with 5.29, I'm speaking purely out of speculation, but I'd assume that you'd top out 3rd gear at 65ish mph, and be able to handle steep hills in 4th gear around 67-68mph. Complete guess here, but the moral of the story is the gears don't improve the torque of the engine, it just makes it rev higher at high speeds so the engine can keep up with itself

EDIT: And when I say steep hills, I mean really steep hills and mountains. On normal sized rolling hills the transmission would be fine with 4.88's
