Question for those who have manual trans with 4WD. When in 2WD and coming to a stop, I shift to neutral, apply brakes, and I can hear what sounds like the transfer case downshifting at <5 mph right before I hit a dead stop. Sometimes it is louder than others. I would think that in 2WD on a 1:1 ratio, that there is no TC shifting going on. Just wondering if others with this configuration hear anything at all? I will be in the shop next week and need to know if I should bring this up. I have not tested with 4hi.

The T-case doesn't do any shifting unless you are changing the 4x4 dial setting. A "Clunk" when coming to a stop is pretty typical with these trucks in all flavors (4x4, auto, manual, 4x2). It is most likely some slack in the driveline or suspension. It is annoying, but perfectly normal. Depending on what it is, there may be a way to reduce/eliminate it.

It's not so much a 'clunk', it is more of a non-synchro gear noise that is winding down, if that makes any sense. It is a strange sound. I guess it could be normal but that is why I am asking.

Doesn't sound normal at all to me. I'd have it checked at the shop.

Are you in 1st gear when this is happening? If so, it is most likely that the motor / drivetrain is quiet and you are hearing the meshing of the 1st gear ratio. It is more of a straight cut gear for strength versus the helical cuts of the rest.

Yep, this.... If it isn't the clunk and you are in 1st (even with the clutch in the transmission is spinning) you will hear it whine a bit.

Nope, I am definitely in neutral. I may post a video if I can get it on a recording.

Even in neutral, the gears are still spinning.

I don't go to neutral until I'm completely stopped and I'll be sitting for more than a few seconds (red light). Then it's going to neutral/clutch out. Save that release bearing!
I'm in gear/clutch out all the way down until just above idle too.

Maybe that's why I don't hear what you're describing? Dunno :notsure:

Anyway, this is my Friday BITCHES. Clinky
