bought a 2018 TRD Sport about a month ago and got the factory tri-fold hard tonneau cover. Have a few questions about this topic:

First - is this thing supposed to be water proof? We've gotten a lot of rain in Maryland this summer and I feel like the seal is garbage. Had my golf bag in the bed of the truck and it's gotten soaking wet.

Next, and more importantly - is it possible to get replacement sections for the cover? I stupidly just opened one section and without thinking about it got on the highway and at high speed it flipped closed and got a hole busted right in the middle of the back section (I know it was stupid, feel free to laugh at me but keep the wise cracks to yourselves lol).

Does the lack of water proofing make it not even worth fixing and just getting a whole new cover?

do you have the factory cover, too? if it's possible and cheap to replace just the one section I'm fine doing that but I wouldn't even know where to start searching for that lol

I leased the truck so don't want to pour too much into it if I don't have to

I ditched mine and refused to pay for it when I bought my truck, sold it for $400 on CL with rails swapped. If I were you I'd a) find replacement non oem cover rails and then b) go with a bakflip mx4 cover. My dad has one on his 18 Raptor and its pretty dang waterproof, solid and less ugly than OEM. I plan on investing in one as well at some point.

are you pushing down on the rear corners?

Assuming they didn't change it from the 2017s you need to push on hte last latch to get it to lock tight and reduce the water that comes in.
Otherwise no it is not water proof just water resistant.

For the replaceable panels, they do exist but don't know if the dealer would actually sell.
I know for certain they exist because when my clip broke that you use to lock it open when driving, they took forever to get the replacement clip. It broke in the winter from the cold I guess and they replaced it under warranty because I bought the cover with the truck.
They were eventually able to get just the clips but initially they ordered just a whole new piece for one fold.

Mine has sealed nicely and as other have said. Be sure to shut the tailgate first then the cover and be sure the cover clicks in order to get the good seal. If the cover is factory it still maintains the warranty with the truck for repairs.

Toyota, states it's water resistant, not water proof. My 2018 let's a little water in upon a hard rain but not much.
I believe it's more for providing a measure of security (key locked) as opposed to leaving your belongings totally exposed than water-proof storage.

No the factory cover is not watertight, it’s not designed to be (read the specs), and neither is any other tri fold cover. (Some will claim otherwise, but just search, same complaints about all of them). You can get the oem to be fairly water “resistant”, but never fully water tight like the cab.

If you leased it and it came with the OEM tonneau, won't that cover need to be there when you return the truck? Or are you planning on buying it at lease end?

Make sure the below the cab corners are tightly snapped shut; as well as the rear and like said above, first close tailgate then rear fold, push hard to make sure you hear the lock snap shut...no gap between the seal and bed at 4 corners. Adjust if necessary. My OEM may allow very few drips after a frog drowning rainfall. No more than any other cover.

I doubt they'd ding you for what's technically an accessory on a lease turn in. You could always just take it off. I'm not sure how Toyota does it, but sometimes it's a third party that assesses it anyway. As a fellow Marylander I can say that in the last few months, mine hasn't leaked at all, despite all this damn rain.

I would check with your dealer from what I was told since it's a factory only item its covered under the warranty of the truck.

No, it isn't supposed to be waterproof and they have disclaimers in the manual.

Mine is mostly waterproof. I have to mess with it a bit to get a complete seal all the way around and sometimes I don't get it fully reseated and I get leaks but my truck is so multipurpose that I never have much in the bed for very long.

My problem is finding parts. I dropped at some point and I have broken the small strip for the front fold (held on with 2 screws) and I can't find any parts anywhere. Last ditch is to call the dealer.

Are you able to do it without swaping OEM rails?

You could but you still need the brackets that go under the rail and you’ll need to cut your rails to fit those. Just easier to swap with the other person.
