JBL Audio option upgrade

Hey All,

So I've been looking into upgrading my audio system and ultimately decided to go with a set of decent Kickers (https://www.crutchfield.com/p_206DSC6904/Kicker-43DSC69304.html?avf=Y), for the front speakers, and looking and some Kicker Tweeters as well...

I have heard mixed things about having the JBL "premium" audio upgrade off the lot makes upgrading the speakers harder, due to the lack of plug and play, and that I will also (probably?) need an AMP.

I'm far from savvy when it comes to any type of electrical work on vehicles, and will be learning throughout this process, but I am curious to those who have upgraded their JBL system. Is it that much harder to do a simple speaker upgrade, or am over thinking this? I know the power for the speakers will be different, but have heard that the stock head unit should be able to power a set of aftermarket speakers and tweeters.

I bounced back and forth with upgrading to the JBL package when I first bought my 2016 Tacoma. I decided to take my truck to my local car audio shop and went with Alpine Type S door speakers (powered by a separate door speaker amp), Two 8inch Alpine 8 inch subwoofers (Had to remove both of the plastic storage cubby's behind the rear seat. Both powered by 500 watt amp) and a LC7i line output converter because I kept the stock because I didn't want to mess with the camera and steering wheel controls. The amps and line output converter sit underneath the two front seats tucked away. My buddy bought the JBL package and we sat in each others Taco and my setup was definitely superior. I'd get a quote at a local car audio place and see the difference. I give anyone credit who want to install car stereo equipment DIY. I was too lazy and wouldn't have the patience to last the installation, so I got it done professionally. There are cheaper setups that probably rival the JBL package. Also Dynamat will help seal the cab from road noise and reduce vibration from the speakers to give a much better crisp sound (I didn't do this but wish I did).

Alpine or flop!! This would be a hell of a set up.

 

Sweet man! I'll be doing a bit of shopping tomorrow and price checking for a bit. I was trying to avoid doing a stereo swap, AMP and Sub install, but I'm gonna be doing it for sure... no harm in it, thats for sure lol

 

OP let me know what setup you ended up going with. I'm always curious to see what others stereo setup looks like and how they like it.
