How far can you safely air down w/o bead locks? Running 265-70 17Rs on TRD wheels. I’ve heard 20lbs or down to 13lbs which seems more risky to me. Driving on sand and dry, not overly rocky trails.

    What hasn't been modified?
Tire size doesn't matter as much as what brand, load rating, terrain, speed,

20 lbs is the starting point most of the time... if mud or sand 12 to 15 is more appropriate. Yes, you can pop a bead or get something lodged in the tire bead. I had a few small rocks get stuck in the bead, tire would not hold more than 24lbs when aired back up.
It was raining and trail was slick as snot.

Depends on if it's a 10 ply or 6 ply tire. I generally stay around 17 lbs for almost everything and if I'm really struggling I'll go down to 13. But I wont go any lower than that and I'm running 10 ply tires with Method Bead Grip wheels

I would start at 18 - 20. If your really struggling you can go down a bit more but make sure you have the means to get out if you do pop a bead

That's fun to do with a can of brake cleaner, lighter and a ratchet strap :D

Good advice. Haven’t had to pop a bead back on—guessing there’s a YouTube video on that. ;)

I usually run around 36 psi for daily driving but I have E rated 275/70r17 KO2's and have gone down to 16psi many times with no problems. Done as much as 30-40 miles of sand / a little rock crawling on method NV wheels (no beadlock).
I don't think I would go much lower though...

Whatever you do, airing down definitely makes a HUGE difference.

Start at 15 psi. I rolled two beads in Moab at 8 psi, that was too low.

    Lots of sail boat fuel
18-20 tackles most things. I'll drop 25 on corrugated roads

    I wouldn't go any lower than 15psi !!!

    Any lower would need beadlocks
