I think part of the issue is the engine they probably originally wanted to put in wasn't ready. So they went off the self and turned down the boost here. From 2015 on, GL/GLS is a 3.0 TT v6 with the same horsepower, but only 369tq. However if you compare the market and what it competes with, those numbers are pretty typical. The cost to step up with the higher horsepower in the 550 is quite the jump. When I bought the GL a few years ago, I was also looking for the GL550. However it was a good $15-20k to get into one. I couldn't justify it. I was also looking at the Audi Q7, but top line power maker was using the 3.0 supercharge v6, but topped out at 333hp (same unit used in the S4). To be honest though the 450 with the modest power is still pretty good. 0-60 in high 5-second to low 6-seconds, and there is never a feeling like there isn't enough power. Not bad for moving around 5600lbs.

Couldn't be happier man. Both the misses and I like it quite a bit. Excellent value for the money. It's smaller and more aggressive looking than the Outback. Ground clearance is excellent and ride is smooth and quiet (but KO2s add a bit of noise haha). We're avg around 26 mpg mostly city miles with the KO2s and roof rack. Closer to 31 highway @ 65mph. Compared to my Taco it's like driving a golf cart.

My commute is 21 miles one way, so I don’t take the bike more than twice a week.

I dd a Volvo v60 polestar. It’s night and day from the Tacoma, but it’s great to have both options.

Assuming you have the CVT, do you have any complaints with the shifting?

Yup, we've got the CVT. We opted for the "limited" model. No issues with the shifting. And compared to my taco it's significantly better. Shifting is smooth and it doesn't hunt for gears at the thought of going up a small hill haha. It's not the fastest car in the world... pretty sure 0-60 is faster in the taco. But the CVT is plenty good for the 152hp that the subie's 4 cylinder puts out where it's zippy enough for city/highway driving.

It also handled about 1+ft of unplowed powdery roads this winter up in the Idaho rockies like it was nobodies business (With KO2s and "x-mode" turned on).
