just learned that you have to plug your phone in to USB cable to use CarPlay. Why?!!! I hate cables more than Entune. Why couldn’t it be Bluetooth enabled. I’m not a tech guy, so there’s probably a good reason I’m missing. But back to cables and adaptors?!! No thanks. I buy a Tacoma TRD Sport/OR/Pro if it came with a two knob stereo, 5 push-in presets, and a good place to mount my phone.

Can’t blame Toyota for that, that’s the way android auto and apple carplay were designed by google and apple

How can it do phone and iTunes via “AUX” and Bluetooth, but not the rest?

Huh? CarPlay has been wireless since iOS9 on aftermarket head units and some high end vehicles since 2017... https://www.macrumors.com/roundup/carplay/

I have a new Chevy traverse and it needs a cable, that’s what I’m basing my knowledge off of

New Jeep Wrangler and Mercedes Benz both require cables too. Guess what new feature the ‘21 Tacoma will have...

I'm 100% appreciative of any sort of CarPlay or AA in the Tacoma. Simply put it this way.. last I heard BMW is charging a premium of ~$80 annually for their CarPlay services. I've also heard that Apple charges a premium for their wireless technology to manufacturers.

TLDR.. free CarPlay or AA (wired or not) is fine with me.

Assuming both options (wired or wireless) performed the same of course I would always choose wireless. I really enjoyed the wireless connection with Entune when I bought my new truck and before had always used a wired connection. In the long run, I could not stand the lack of CarPlay with Entune and was underwhelmed with the premium audio package that I aftermarketed the fuck out of anything stock stereo related in my truck.

Now I rock a Alpine ILX-F309. I have wired CarPlay, and having wired CarPlay is better than not having it at all :)

Wish it was the early 2000s where you can buy any after market head unit, amps etc... without worrying about other features that may interfere with TSS sensors and other gizmos.

There are very few head units (even aftermarket) that support wireless CarPlay.

Seems ridiculous in 2019, but here we are.

Yes. To get it to play you must; take dvd disc, place underneath driver's seat data side down, wait 10 seconds and it should auto play...

In the long run there are some benefits that help outweigh the cons of no wireless CarPlay; such as always charging keeping your cell's battery full, more responsive interface (using wireless BT can cause very minor input delays, making it feel a little sluggish) and faster loading of music library.

I recently bought the Kenwood DDX9906XR, but when I try to connect Wi-fi to my cell phone it does not connect, I have the Samsung note 5, only the android auto is connecting me via USB port and not wireless

Just as information, CarPlay uses an ad hoc WiFi wireless connection to your phone, not Bluetooth.

One of the main reasons you can’t just update the firmware of an existing head unit.

I am pretty sure android auto can run through Bluetooth.
