My first taco was a regular cab, currently own the extended cab. Reg cab was a good little truck and I like the look of them but the extended is more practical and fits my current needs better. Can store way more tools and junk in the back of extended cab. I think your wife has a fair point about feeling cramped. The regular cab interior is pretty tight, extended is bigger obviously but both still feel small when compared to newer vehicles. Both bucket and bench seats are not very comfortable in my experience.

This man has his priorities and life in order: never married so he doesn't have to worry about other half opinion of reg cab or access cab, has nice taco and wheels/tires, has the fishing boat, etc. My life goals man:cool::D

Fun: Regular cab looks the best. Reg-cab with V6 even better.
Practical: Only vehicle or camping rig, go extended-cab.
    I went extended-cab because I found a hell of a deal.

    MOST ....
Tweeked blown V6 in a light shell/frame (2wd, as 4wd in inherently ... different) is always the best combo!

Was there that combo sold in showrooms? If so, when?

A little late, but after having a reg cab as a daily for a year I would much rather have an xtra cab. I love the way regular cabs look, but they're really impractical if you have any type of hobby that takes up space (even more so if you have friends that are also into that hobby and want to go do that together).
You have to cope with the fact that your big storage space is the bed, and you'll have to invest in something to secure it as well. In my case that's a soft tonneau and a locking gate handle. I have enough space in the cab for a small set of tools, an air hose for my compressor, winch controls, a tow strap, and a towel or two if I'm feeling froggy. I have a pelican case in the bed I keep all my other essentials in.
But like I said, some practicality just isn't there. Since all my groceries have to go in the passenger seat, I go to the store by myself. If I go shoot, all my gun cases and gear have to go in the bed and get bounced around to and from the range. When I go ride/race, it looks hilarious. If me and a buddy want to go ride together, the truck looks like something from Grapes of Wrath.

All told, if I had to do it again I'd buy a truck with a bigger cab, but I'm not getting rid of the truck I already have at this point. I like it too much :p

I didn’t really have a choice but I love my regular cab and have no issues with storage. I don’t really like having people in my truck anyway and I can fit 3 if I need to. No regrets at all!

I DD a '96 single cab 2.4 5spd, and love it. However, there are many times I wish I had a bit more space behind the seat for tools and stuff. But the 2wd ext. cabs looks so long and stretched out and ugly to me. I like the short compact little single cabs. I can really only carry one passenger with the 5spd, unless the second one is pretty small. Legs get in the way of shifting and it's super cramped. But with an automatic it'd probably be ok with 2 passengers

@TennesseeWilliam, I have owned a 2005 double cab Tacoma and my current 2003 regular cab Tacoma, both 4X4. My main gripe with the double cab was fuel economy; 15-17 MPG empty and 12-13 MPG loaded up. For me that took all the fun out of it.

My regular cab is my favorite vehicle I've ever owned. The maneuverability makes it really fun to drive, both off-road and in the city. When it was stock it got 24-25 MPG without even trying to get good fuel economy. In its current state, it still gets 20 MPG in town and 22-23 MPG freeway. I have spent several days in the hot desert with the A/C cranked, my camping gear and full jerry cans of water and fuel in the back, driving hundreds of miles in 4WD/4-Lo on rough roads and still averaged 19 MPG to a tank of gas. My BFF also has a 2003 regular cab Tacoma. His is a 2WD manual and gets 27-28 MPG commuting. The 2005-2015 regular cabs have a bit more power, a bit more space and slightly better fuel economy.

The storage space behind the seat is surprisingly decent. Even with the seat all the way back there's a good 8" X 45" gap. I'm pretty sure it will fit a charger for your iPhone, so you won't have to take a camera, compass, newspaper, calendar, alarm clock, calculator, maps, phone book, sony walkman and cassettes.

I absolutely love my 2002, 2.4, manual. It has only 65K miles on it and I roll it 75-80 MPH on the freeways daily. While I sometimes wish I had an extra cab, I couldnt pass it up when I saw it listed on Craigslist with only 29K on it. Its peppy, very light but the interior is a little tight. But its all good and Im planning on driving it till the wheels fall off. Im hearing from more and more people about the size of trucks lately (folks dont like how big they have become). Grateful to own this baby.

Love my Regular Cab for my DD and Hunting/Exploring Rig. It has its pros and cons. I don’t think I could just get by with only having a Regular Cab Tacoma but when I need something with more room I drive my 2016 DBLCB.

Just got back from a baseball tournament 25 miles away (first day of 2- son’s team went 2 for 2 to secure #1 seed for tomorrow).

Anyways, as the truck was hot (90 F), we put down both windows & drove home. We never bothered to put on the A/C, as the air flowing in & across the window (solid, no slider) was plenty to keep us comfortable. With the short cab, the windflow was right around your head & upper body.

(Both myself & my 14/almost 15 yo are around 6’ tall)

We also has a team-mate ride with us to get lunch-about 5 miles away. You need a bench for that.

    The team-mate:
“Mr John, why does your little truck sound like a sports car?”

    hahahahaha

Guess what your coming from makes a difference on “cramped.” Compared to the Miata, the bench seated short cab is comfy & roomy. It feels similar to the xB front (but not quite as tall vertically as the B).
I’m very happy everything is within arms reach & the seating position is about where I like it.

If your used to a van, SUV, full size truck, or a roomy sedan, I’m sure it would feel cramped.

    So:
If you need to carry a fair amount of “stuff” on a regular basis or need it secured, an access/xtracab will suit you better.
If you “travel light” & so forth, you’ll be happy with the short cab.
If you need back seats that are actually useable for people, get a double cab.

bout the same, I dunno maybe I slouched too much. yes everything is right where it needs to be just my preference that I didnt like the fact you couldnt lean the seat back very far and just seemed cramped to me, I had it maybe 2 yrs. I took it from Boise to SD and back and that was a painful trip...Plus I couldnt fit much stuff behind the seat.

In terms of MPGs, going from single cab to extracab certainly makes a difference but will be pretty negligible - perhaps a 1-2 mpg difference at most.

If you really want better mpg you'll be wanting to go for a manual 2.4 as opposed to a automatic 2.4 which have a significant difference in gas consumption. A auto 2.4 will get 16-18 city/20-22 hwy, while a manual 2.4 will be in the 21-22 city/ 24-26 hwy.

For the 2.7 tacos the range between auto and manual are not as pronounced, and 3.4 its pretty even overall. That said, if your getting a auto taco for better mpg, I wouldn't try to get my hopes up to high haha.

Personally speaking I'm not much a fan of single cabs but thats just me haha. I just really like having the ability to park somewhere, lean the chair back, and have a nap. Not begin able to adjust the chair further back is a ocd thing that can drive me pretty stir-crazy lol. Also like having that extra space for storing things in the back clear out of view.
