Just moved from California to Portland (actually Tualatin) and I'm trying to find a good insurance company. I have State Farm, who has been a great company. Recently I moved agents and this new agent isn't working out. I was quoted a lower rate when I moved out here but "something happened in underwriting" and my policy shot up in price. No tickets, no accidents, great credit, low annual miles and I'm a student.

I am considering All State, Progressive, and AAA. Do you have any recommendations or feedback from your experience with your insurance?

Safeco was the best deal for my family but I had my agent price out different companies and it beat all the others.

Being you're a Student I guess you wouldn't happen to be a Veteran. If you were a Veteran then USAA all the way.
My 2012 DCSB and my wife's 2018 Mercedes AMG SUV. Both full coverage $250 deductible $140/month. Nationwide was charging us $270 for the exact same coverage.

I will have to check Safeco out. Thanks for the recommendation.

You are correct, not a veteran. I have been with State farm for about a decade and haven't filed 1 claim, no accident or ticket on record. My new agent up here quoted me a great price but "something happened in underwriting" and my rates went up. She said she did not have access to find out why or inquire any further.

So far the top contender is Geico and Progressive. I would pay about $20 less a month for better coverage. I am thinking about lowering my coverage but I know the moment I do, some sh!t is going to happen. I wonder if I can stay with State farm and switch agents?

Pretty sure you can... call around. Her not being able to check why or what happened is complete BS.

so far I have only had USAA and progressive, USAA is awesome, and progressive has been good. Good prices and the policy with progressive keeps dropping every year I don't make a claim, have an accident, or moving violation.

I would say get quotes from all and see what happens and narrow the playing field of candidates. Is there anyway you could bypass your agent and go above his head to figure out why your prices went up? Nothing happens without a reason and just not being able to know why your prices went up makes no sense. That's like the worst answer ever. Basically, prices went up because stop f**king asking.

Chances are if indeed something in underwriting a new agent should get the same price, however a better agent should be able to get you answers. I can tell you as an agent that if there's something causing a rate change after running reports I know exactly what it is. State Farm has a personal lines underwriting department still. There should be no reason the agent couldn't give you an answer.

Having worked both sides of the business call center and agency I'll always recommend an agency issued policy if you find a good agent and more importantly agency staff. More personalized service. Typically better claims service/payouts from the State Farms Allstate's Safeco over the geico and progressive's. Plus if something goes sideways you have a dedicated agent to assist you.

I have asked 3 times already and I keep getting the run around from her. I think she works for the agent listed on my account. Either way, it's pretty ridiculous.

I agree with you and I want to stick with State Farm, at least for the truck. I'll look into SafeCo and Allstate as well.

I think I am going to schedule a meeting with the agent that's actually listed on my account and try to get answers. I don't want to come off as condescending but she lost my confidence.

@OnePuttBlunder, since your in the insurance business maybe you can shed some light on my situation.
I have State Farm, been with them for many years, today when I got my renewal in the mail, there was a 16.5 % price increase. No accidents, no tickets no reason on my part why it went up so much.
Is this something my agent could possibly get lowered or is it just time to shop.

So I ended up meeting with about 4 different agents and the last one proved very helpful. We found out that my quote was for a different term and my actual rate went up by about 20%. I didn't get a reason why, I was told it's all about metrics. Apparently they input everything into a "little black box" and it generates a rate. My rate went up despite having a clean driving record in the 10 years I was with the company. They lost me as a customer.

All the agents I met with consistently said that they have no control over what comes out of this mysterious underwriting "black box". They all said that there is no recourse to issues like this and it makes me wonder if their agents are just glorified middle men that drive the cost of the insurance premium up.

That large of an increase is one of a couple things. Either state farm was super late to react to market impacts like overall claims frequency and costs. This would lead to a large state wide rate increase to get their rates back in line with trends.

Or something changed on your policy. Lost a discount or tier change due to age or something to that effect

Either way a call to your agent should get you answers at a minimum review your policy make sure you're not missing discounts etc. If not happy with results then shop.

Yea thanks, I’m shocked at the increase. I did try calling my agent but he hasn’t returned my call.
Now I’m thinking about switching agents. Can I do that?

Each company is different some require your current agent to authorize the transfer others like us will do so at customers request without hassle, but the writing agent retains commission on existing policies. Definitely bad form for agent not to answer phone and then not return a call promptly.

Yea my account was transferred to him when my original agent retired and closed his business. My account was sent to the closest agent in a different town. That was 2 yrs ago. Now we have a SF agent in my town and I would like to use him.

    Everything but the driveshaft. B03A - 410
With three young drivers on my policy, AAA had the best rates for my home and auto policy situation. Right now I have six vehicles insured. I'm not crazy about the local AAA office and agent. I just tolerate them because of the low price.

I use Mapfre through my AAA agent. $140+25 for renters insurance. Just ran a quote through USAA and it was $230+40/month. I think I'll stay where I'm at with Mapfre

Age has a big impact but I've had great rates with Gieco, high end coverage, low deductibles, about $65 a month on a new truck.

I think it goes up 10-15 bucks every six months, I tend to change coverage, up and down depending on how much traveling I'm doing. It's the lowest rate I could find, even the pay by mile ins was higher.
