For those who do their own oil changes, do you fill the oil filter up with oil or put it on dry?

    Why or why not?

    Thanks,

Also sorry if this is a repeat thread.

I leave it dry like my woman and just screw it in.

    Why because I don't care.

Pretty much this. In the big scheme of things it really doesn't matter. People have been doing it both ways for decades. As long as you use a decent filter, oil that meets spec, change the oil hot, and stick to a reasonable oci the engine will likely outlast the frame/body. If you think quicklube or the dealer fills the filter and filter housing (on our 3.5l trucks) with oil first, well I got a bridge to sell you.......

I fill the filter before putting it on, cause that's the way my father taught me to change the oil. I dont think it makes much differance.

You don't need to anymore, and I don't bother on my own cars.

    Buuuut

If you only do one or two oil changes a year, why not?

I was taught long ago to fill the filter and let the oil saturate the element, and I've done it that way on every vehicle I've ever owned, regardless of the filter's orientation on the engine. One train of thought would be that it fills faster with less to no interruption in oil flow, but another train would say there's enough residual oil in the pump and oil channels that you shouldn't need to worry about starting the engine with no oil flow until the filter is filled. In either case, I'll keep doing it the same way I've always done it...….just in case.

While the rest go off the deep end like usual, I can add one other helpful tip. If you have not changed the oil in your truck yet, be careful when draining the oil. It comes out with a vengeance and tends to splatter everywhere. Much more so than the upteen other vehicles I've done oil changes on in the past.

It doesn’t matter. Fill the damn filter if it makes you feel better. I do, because I anthropomorphize my truck, and I want it to know I make every effort, no matter how small, to ensure it’s longevity. Still on the fence about vaccinations .

Fumoto valve fixes that issue right up. Takes a little longer to drain, but less mess.

Dry, because who gives a fuck. If it was important it would be specified. I'd venture a guess that the filter is after the valve train. Meaning oil pump>valve train>filter. The filter has built in bypasses too, so even if it's clogged it'll still bypass oil and not starve the pump.

I fill it up, as don’t need any added time to run the engine w/o oil. It’s an extra 15 seconds to fill it, and you can lube the o rings with it as well.

Dry, I have never had anyone other then myself change the oil in any of my vehicles since the 25+ years I've been driving. I have keep them all past 150k and some near 300k. I worked at repair shops early in my life for a number of years and still do almost all maintenance and repairs myself. When I did finally sell them, all were still running perfectly with no oil consumption, smoking or leaks. Granted, almost all were Toyota and all were gas engines.

Have 2x Cummings 5.9 turbo / intercooled / after cooled engines in my boat. 12 quarts / oil change.
ALWAYS fill the oil filters before starting the engines.
$25-35k to replace one engine... Not worth taking a chance.

I fill it, or at least put as much in as I can without making it messy getting the cartridge back on. Old school advice I was given years ago was filling the cartridge was better for the engine on first start up - don't know if it's true or not but I don't care I do it anyways, just feels right lol!!

Yes, high capacity oil filters on diesel engines are an exception, and when Toyota decides to put a diesel engine in the Tacoma then I'll fill mine as well.
