I just finished sanding a 14’x24’ deck. I had used what was highly recommended stain, Defy stain. Did all the prep work, including waiting 6 months for wood to ‘season’ since deck was new. The Defy ‘nano technology’ didn't even last 2 years. Waste of $$.

What I used this time around is Cabot’s Australian Timber Oil, Honey Teak stain. The good thing is you can actually just paint over it as it ages....if/when needed.

I am building a deck gazebo 12’x16’ over it hopefully this weekend if the weather holds....here in south Texas.
    Anyway....just a suggestion about staining.

Deck looks great but Wow 6 months! I’ve heard 4-6 weeks to let the wood dry out. Cabot’s is great stain used it on my fence. Wife wants to stain/paint the deck black, but I’ve heard it will stay tacky in the summer cuz the heat. Gonna do a couple test spots.

Mine was pressure-treated pine. At least from everything I read ‘they’ said 4 to 6 months of weathering. Built it in October so waited until after winter. Interesting was the boards were touching each other when built. After 6 months there is a 1/2” gap between all of them. Cabot’s makes some really dark stains. Black if not covered might get pretty hot in summer. Not sure though...

Glad I'm not alone. I built a simple ramp for our shed using the same lumber you did. I let it age/dry for a year before prepping and applying the Defy stain. It looked nice initially, but only lasted for about a year. It seems to be holding up better on the vertical surfaces, but the more exposed surfaces and the surfaces that get more traffic are almost bare.

One of my projects for this summer is to sand the ramp down and stain it again. I can't recommend the Defy stain either.

After sanding you are suppose to ‘clean’ the wood with wood cleaner which is basically bleach to open up the ‘pores’ so stain will absorb more. Just make sure you rinse the crap out of it with water.

Yup... did all of that, per the instructions. It's just a bad product. Happens sometimes.
