A few OE parts from fancy trucks
So the other unasked major question is how has your OE suspension failed you?

These trucks are pretty versatile with a good set of tires and a good driver, and suspension upgrades can be big bucks with little payback in more cases than folks around here would care to admit.

Thanks, man! It's versatile if you want a topper, but don't want to deal with the hassle of removing it for tall loads.

This is very true. I've done some serous mid-level rock crawling with stock everything and 265/75r16 All-terrains. Can you explain?

I guess what it really comes down to is just being able to lift my truck 2-3in. and fit some bigger tires. That's what I want most without a doubt.

Fitting tires is more about wheel well dimensions and tire location than lift. Look at lifts as improving your suspension's ability to maintain traction and clearance. Tires are another way of doing this. Some guys fit 35s with stock suspension, some with 3" lifts. Your end goal is what matters.

I know you said you were checking out my build thread, but if you follow along, you can see I would take it off-road, identify a weakness, upgrade then wheel it again. Honestly, I can do 95% plus of the trails out there running only OME and skinny 33s. It's the 5% that I'm upgrading stuff to get to.

Yeah I hear ya man. 33's are what I wanna run, and I know I can do that with stock suspension, but still I wanna be able to get into some off-roading and I'd rather be safe than sorry and spend money on upgrading the suspension. 35's look fuckin awesome, but everywhere I read it says you gotta trim your fenders and what not.

Yeah, 35s require a lot of cutting, but even 33s do depending on the size. I didn't need to cut with 255/85r16, but I did need to remove the mud flaps. If I went 285/75r16, I would need to do clearancing. I did it anyways, but keep that in mind. Tires and armor are my number 1 mods for an off-road build.

285/75/r16 are what I had in mind. I like the look of having a lot of rubber and little wheel, know what I mean? What do you mean "clearancing" with the 285/75s?

255 85 16 on proper fitment wheels on stock suspension is a 33.

Suspension lift changes approach and departure angles but tire dia is what creates ground clearance at the axle line, ie the low point of the vehicle.

Understand what is happening and functional impacts before getting your wallet out.

Think how you drive most of the time.
I like to drive into my corners and demand good yawl performance. That made a digressive shock appropriate for my style. This lead me in a research direction.
I also like to hit bumps but prefer to avoid holes.

Then I wanted adjustability and rebuilds. This lead me into more narrowed choices. Then I compared the various options and install manuals and called vendors...finally settled in on what to me was perfect. In the end of the day I lifted my truck a little less than I originally started, and I backed off on the tire size, but the fucking thing drives really really well and I’m thrilled.

Do your homework, and take your time.
