I've been planning on installing a hidden garage door opener for a while now (no Homelink on my base '06). My plan has been to disassemble and hide the opener up under the dash, run a wire to acc +, and then wire that into the garage door opener via an out of the way button so the opener can only work when the ignition is on (to keep someone from breaking into it in the driveway and using the opener to open the garage door).

Today, before I started the project, I thought I'd take a last look at concealed spaces that might allow me to hide an opener well enough that I wouldn't need to disassemble it and do an annoying amount of wiring / soldering.

Lo and behold... the steering wheel adjuster is the exact same size as a Genie G3T-A opener. The plastic adjuster "paddle" is attached to a metal substructure that even has a hole already in it. Remove the key ring from the remote (or in the case of my picture, remove the paracord), slide the remote into the recess where the steering wheel adjustment lever is so it sits on top of the adjuster paddle with the buttons facing up, and run 2 small zip ties through the hole in the lever and the hole in the remote. Takes about 8 seconds to do and keeps it neatly tucked away but still easily accessible. I can't imagine any thief is going to see it there or even think to look for it there.

Worked just as well on my 17 4R; the adjuster is exactly the same.

You can still use the adjuster although it is a bit more awkward, but I always think of that as a 'set it and forget it' thing anyway.

Doesn’t help on the gas that’s for damn sure. Still getting 12mpg... but it really helps with the noise. I will be doing the back wall and the doors later this summer. But for now with the roof rack it helps a lot.

It’s mostly stop and go around town for me, maybe my math is off, or maybe my foot is heavier than I think, I’ll have to do another test next fill up.
