Somewhere along the way, alternator brush holders changed to use a white plastic cover instead of the rubber end seal.

Here's a picture of the old style compared to the new.

To make the new style brush holder work, I had to remove the plastic shield. There is an aluminum shield that is built into the alternator that serves this purpose.

Here's a picture of the alternator back with the new holder and brushes installed. I placed the plastic shield on the alternator so you can see how this is covered in the alternator.

The one thing I learned from this is to avoid letting oil or water run onto the alternator and down into the back. You can see what is behind the tin outer cover in this picture.

It looks like that plastic part is only there to protect the brush during storage/shipping.

Were you able to move the rubber part over to the new holder?

This is awesome. Not something you get to see everyday  Now I feel bad for not taking close pics of my starter when I had it disassembled

These must be different part numbers. Why didn't you get the correct one?

I ordered the Brush Holder listed on the Toyota parts site for my 99 that was Part Number 27371-70300. When the part came in it was a single brush without the holder. So I went to my local dealer and they looked it up and came back with 27370-75060 which is the one with the white shield.

I just found one on eBay that is not available that looks like the one that I need. Then I just found this part on Amazon. Though it is not supposed to be the correct part. This is it.

I just replaced my brushes last week and the dealer had two different brush holder choices. I bought them both and I returned the other one that didn’t fit. The dealership wasn’t sure 100 percent sure which brush set I had, they both had the plastic cover.
The 1st set he thought, was actually the wrong one.
So glad I grabbed them both.
They were around 20.00 at the dealer

Could be OP the alternator was swapped in your truck at some point.

Then Vendors change for Toyota the newer style could be a one size fits more models

Looks like I'm not alone with this issue from this thread below. There appear to be different alternator numbers/versions. I'm not sure what to think about a comment about bedding in the brushes at the end of this thread. Tim's video has the brush version like the one I bought. He doesn't say anything about bedding in the brushes.

I've never heard of bedding in brushes either.

Just to close this posting, I received the correct brush and holder set in the pictures below.

Conclusion: Order brushes and holders that you can see and that you know will match the specific type that is used in your alternator. A "wireframe" parts diagram does not show the differences like an actual photo.

Part with the rubber seal on the brush holder.
