Ordered CVJ axle what else?

    I just ordered a new to me cv axle from CVJ. On their page it says nuts and seals are not provided. I’m assuming the nut is the 35mm but I haven’t heard about seals or just missed it. Could anyone point me in the right direction.

    Well, there should be a 35mm wheel nut already in place on both sides of your truck. You would reuse these as long as they are not damaged. There will be oil seals in the front differential on both passenger and driver side. In theory, they could stay in place when replacing CVs. But they can become damaged during the removal/install...so I recommend replacing with new TOYOTA seals. You are already in there doing a bunch of work anyway so why not just replace them. There are also seals on the inboard side of the hub assemblies. There is less of a chance of damaging them during the process. So as long as nothing is leaking now you could be ok with not replacing them.
    And obviously some tools that can be rented from an auto parts store.
    I highly suggest searching TacomaWorld and the general internet for how to videos. There are plenty available and will make life much easier.

    Thank you! I’ve already found the videos that I need and have acquired all the tools except for a 2nd set of jack stands. I’m going to use the sledge and cable method to remove the axle. I just put a 3rd gens suspension on so have an idea of what I’m dealing with. I will replace the outer seal but not the inner as I’m not having any issues currently.

    I’ll be doing the drivers side and I just can’t decide if I should do the ecgs or not. It doesn’t seem like this should take more than 3 hours the 1st time.

    Just did this... I tried the sledge and cable method and it didn't work for me. Ended up prying out with a crow bar. The seals they talk about are a larger metal washer between the inner cv joint and the differential. Make sure to pry out towards wheel, using the solid edge of the differential as the fulcrum... in other words push the long part of pry bar towards the middle of the truck, with the short side of bar pushing out toward the wheel. If you pry the other way you will dent the metal seal. Pry, then turn the cv joint a third or half revolution and keep prying and turning and it will pop out easy. I damaged my seal by prying the wrong way and just hammered it out flat again and had no problem. When you put cv joint back in the diff. get it started and then hit the edge of the joint with the same crow bar and small sledge, turn it a third, hit again repeat. Do one side at a time so you can match the gap between the joint and diff with the one you haven't started on yet... doesn't seem like its all the way in till you look at the other side and see that the gap is the same. Took me about 2 hours on the first side and 45 min on the second side.
