I just went to get an oil change and asked the guy to grease the drive shaft and slip yoke and he said I don't have any zerks. My truck is a 2001 stick 2wd extra cab. Is this guy messing with me or just lazy and didn't want the work? Thanks

I've got an '02 Prerunner double cab with the V6 and I know it has zerks. It's the only Tacoma I've owned though, couldn't say with certainty that your's would have them. My mechanical experience with the Tacoma's is limited to mine. :) lol It would be easy enough to slide under there though and see. Just check all the joints in the drive shaft.

In my experience factory stuff doesn't have zerks, but once it gets replaced, the aftermarket stuff does.

My 2000 does definitely have them .

Is it a Prerunner or a 5 lug? The 6lug Tacomas have zerk fittings on the u-joints and on the slip yoke, my '99 had them.

Take photos of your u-joints and slip yoke?

Oh wait, I just saw you have a stick shift 2wd which means you have a 5 lug Tacoma. Yeah you might not have zerk fittings then, I don't know about the 5 lugs.

Yeah, more reading about it says there is none, damn. I thought would be a good starting point to track down this clunking noise when i step on or release the brakes

No, actually I feel it in front .under neath drivers side, I can feel it...I open the door and watch my left front tire jolt as the clunking noise happens...going 1-5mph in my driveway. Which initially I thought brakes were a place to start inspecting

U-joints in need of grease would really only be felt in the rear where the driveshaft is, if you're feeling it in the front and watching the tire move as it happens then I would be very worried that your lower ball joint might be on the verge of going out, which is common on these trucks (bad design flaw). If the lower ball joint fails, your wheel and tire will separate from the truck while driving and that won't be good. I would get those checked.

Google "Tacoma lower ball joint failure" and you'll see what I mean.

Alternatively, you could be looking at very worn out suspension on that side in particular and might need new shocks/springs up front.
