I recently bought a tandem axle 7000# dump trailer with a dry weight of 2150#. The reason I bought this particular dump was more for its features vs weight capacity. I don’t plan to ever get close to trying to max out the trailer.

In addition to hauling various materials, the next largest thing I’d haul is my JD 1025R, which probably weighs just under 2500# as configured.

Assuming a yard of say 2A stone is somewhere between 2700-3000#, that’s pushing the 5000# mark. From reading this thread it seems like that’s were things start to go a little south for some people.

SR5 5.7L Tundra would have no issues according to the specs, but I hate to leave the Tacoma family. Truck would not be a DD (except maybe some days in the winter), so fuel economy isn’t that big of a factor.

    Any thoughts?

    Lol.

You need a Tundra to haul that.

I have both a Tundra and a Tacoma. Once you tow with the Tundra, you will wonder why you even considered using the Tacoma.

Besides. It would be unsafe to tow that trailer with a load with the Tacoma.

In addition, fuel consumption, really us not an issue.

I get 3 mpg better with the Tacoma. It's not enough savings to even use that as an issue.

I would go check out some Tundras and see how you wear them.

One of the best trucks I’ve ever owned. The Tundra has some quirks, much like any brand/make of vehicles.

Things to research, depending on generation:

-capacity rating. If I had a nickel for ever time someone complained about the load ratings of the Tundra....1/2 ton truck for Pete’s sake...not a semi.
-Cam tower leaks. I don’t believe this is as big of an issue. Most of these “seeps” never even touch the ground. However, it is a rather pricey repair if not under warranty. Could also be bargaining tool as well.
-AIP failures. @koditten that has posted in this thread did his own bypass on this, or buy some of the kits available. This is mostly a 07-2011 issue.
-the old needle bearing in the front differential, like the Tacoma and 4R. These were updated sometime in the 3rd gens Tundra. Mine failed at 60k on my 12’ CM. Most people don’t have this issue, and I was using the Tundra at max capacity more often than not.

Sign up over here as well, lots of great people just like here.

Thanks for the information & advice! I checked out & drove the Tundra last night. It’s a lot of truck! I can see how it would indeed be an entirely different towing experience.

Tundra’s EPA numbers make me vomit...but I LOVE that giant rear slider. That alone is worth burning three extra barrels of crude each week.

I don't know what the difference is between a limited and an SR5, but you can buy an aftermarket power slider for $750ish. I did this for my DC.

I did try contacting CR Laurence, they pointed me toward "glass shops". I called every glass shop in my area and they had no idea what I was talking about. Every time I asked them about "CR Laurence "Power Sliders" they would just say, "yea, we do sliding windows", then I had to explain that I wanted one installed from scratch, and then they begged off. Where did you get yours & did they install it for you?

I struck a deal with my auto glass shop.

They sold it to me at cost and installed it as a non powered rear slider for $150.

I told them I wanted to do the power pack and wireing installation myself. I found out before hand that the power pack is sheet metal screwed into the back of the cab. I did it myself without hacking up my truck cab.

The glass shop was more than happy to give me a deal since I wanted to do the wire install.

I got mine thru Bushy's auto glass in Midland Michigan. They had it delivered the day after I ordered it. Installed 2 hrs later.

The kit is easy with good instructions.

Existential crisis? Get a f@#$ing grip. A vehicle is a tool. It's a hauling tool, a towing tool, an off-road tool, a track tool, a carry the kids and an occasional load of ga4den mulch tool, a cruising in comfort to work tool, a feed your ego tool, whatever. It's still just a freaking tool. Big dollars and parking space areboth way more precious and limited than a few square inches in a box or a shelf so if a vehicle tool doesn't serve your purposes, dump that shit and get the right tool. Its that simple.

If it's not a daily driver, 100 percent get the Tundra. I loved my 2014(R.I.P.). It has WAY more power, tows SO MUCH BETTER, and has WAY more room. I wish I still had mine at times but dailying the Taco is definitely easier since it's not as big. If I was in your situation though I'd dump the Taco for a Tundra in a heartbeat, having owned both. Not to mention towing 5k lbs is going to be safer with the more capable truck than pushing your Taco to the limit. And you could actually load that nice new trailer of yours to the 7k lb. limit.

It's NOT a daily driver? Mog ISN'T an issue? Then WHY use an expensive truck? Its beater time.

Get an old f250 for a couple grand. Im a big fan of purpose owned vehicles. When i was more active and lived in Wy in had a sports car for the nice days, a Tacoma for the other 11.5 months, and f250 with a460 to haul, an old jeep just to plow, the wife's suv... and acres of land for parking:) but scale back a bit and youth have a truck that doesn't mind the weight and your dd doesn't get torn up by being maxed out.
