First MOAB TRIP!

I'm planning a trip to Moab beginning of June. This will be my first time off roading. Any advice or tips? I just want to take some easy trails nothing to crazy. I own a DCLB off-road 4x4 taco all stock. I don't mind staying over night. Thanks so much!!!

 

Should be a good time. Weather has been pretty wet and cold lately, so that'll keep the dust down a bit. What dates are you gonna be out there?

Your truck will be fine up to about Fins&Things and Hell's revenge level with a little spotting. You'll prob scrape the trailer hitch at worst.

Got a camping spot figured out already?

 

I don't know where to camp, was planning just to park somewhere along the trail for the night. I will definitely get this book!

 

A lot of the Moab trails are only a few hours long day trip kinda trails. Lots of area north of town to camp on since it is BLM land. Willow Springs rd about 10 mins from town is a good spot to crash, as is Klondike Bluffs about 20 mins north of town.

 

Should I purchase a pair of maxtracks? and D-Ring shackles?

 

Traction boards are always good to have. What are you gonna do with D rings? Id get the stuff they attach to first

 

AHHH my bad!! Probably look into some traction boards but they're soo pricey!!! The trails I'm looking at seem people easy like Chicken corner and gemini bridge. I really want to do top of the world trail but i dont think my rig is ready for that LOl.

 

Gemini bridges is a cool make your own adventure road.

As far as traction boards go, i had a set of Xbull boards from Amazon that worked quite well before i moved to maxtrax. I would never say they are the same, but i def got my moneys worth from my xbulls

 

Traction boards and other recovery aides/safety gear are a lot cheaper than the alternatives.. especially if you’re going alone.

Knowing how to use all the gear is paramount. Don’t rush into situations you aren’t ready for or can’t yet afford or justify the price of. I know things add up in no time flat, so not knocking your wallet or anything like that - just saying, money is well spent on things that keep you safe and get you home. Expensive yes, but necessary in the larger picture.

I have been going to Moab for decades. My advice is to go with someone. Be careful and enjoy the trip. Good luck.

 

I'm going with a buddy of mine but just one Rig. We both don't know much about off roading. I just know that i need to air down around 25psi. And 4L when I need to.

 

Never go offroad by yourself. Have your buddy rent a Jeep there, now you have a rescue vehicle. Moab is a blast.

 

Dang. I guess I won't be off roading. Probably just stick to pavement roads

 

There’s tons of great dirt roads even if you are hesitant about trails. Shafer Trail (it’s a road, not a trail) down off the mesa and then Potash Rd back into town is easy for a stock Tacoma (probably in 2wd) and is spectacular. Lots of info for other routes on line ... be prepared (maps, plus water and food for you even more important than recovery gear) but have fun!

 

Do you feel like I should bring extra fuel? debating on buying some paxfuels.

 

I’m not really a Moab expert, but you’ll only need fuel if you’re on a multi-day trip and it sounds like you’re going to do pretty mild stuff. Trails are mostly very close to town, with lots of fuel options, so just fill up before going out. 100 miles in a day is pretty extreme there.

 

I mentioned this in another thread, but some low risk options for great scenery that a stock tacoma can handle without any real issue are shafer trail, monitor and Merrimack trail and long canyon. They have really good picture opportunities, and your stock truck with a little bit of driver skill should be just fine. They are also traveled regularly enough that should you happen to get a flat or something silly like that, you should see someone pretty soon.

But what others have said, it is always a better idea to go with a second vehicle. Your buddy can rent a Jeep in town for a couple hundred bucks a day, if I recall correctly.

 

This book is a must for visiting the Moab area!

OP, the Flint Trail is a nice long day trip, or you could find a campsite and make it an overnight trip.

 

Conner I'd like to ask you a few questions, If I could. 1st I got the book and of course to me it seems to be more set to " Jeeps" then Tacomas . Mine is lifted 3" with 33" tires, running winch, sliders, skids, front camera, trailer hitch slider, I'm sure i'll drag my rear bumper a few times and if I rip it off then i'll get a new one. any trail I should avoid or any I should really try? I plan on fins & things along with Hells revenge thinking about poison spider and golden spike . i'd also do white rim trail unless I find some good photo/drone shots before getting there .

 

So I've only been a ride along on the 4x4 trails. But fins, Hell's, and White Rim are totally doable in a tacoma. You'll scrape the hitch in a few places on Fins, but you'll have a good time. You truck is more than plenty.
