that same sort of thing usually happens for me but in 1st gear......just push the clutch in once or twice while you've got it in neutral and that'll start moving things around, she'll slide right into gear

 

yep, definitely did that a few times after i first learned to drive a stick.......now when i'm in an automatic I have to tuck my left foot back against the seat so I don't go for the imaginary clutch.....

 

Just made the swap to 255/85/16 tall skinny tires and it improved starts in first gear. I’m no longer holding up traffic trying to smoothly get to 2nd off the line whereas before 1st felt a bit short and I had to wind it out.

 

Care to elaborate on why that is?

 

You’re moving faster at the same engine RPMs since the tire is taller.

I can’t complain much on mileage. I had a pic somewhere of 25.3 mpg on a short 15 mi trip at about 50 mph keeping my foot out. On the highway, 70-85 mph (mostly 80) over 100 mile trip I got 19.4. With 430 gears, I figure that’s pretty good. Probably getting help from TRD CAI & Catback exhaust. Wish I had more lower end torque though.

 

Does anyone have issues with the reverse gearing on this truck? I am coming from my 16 Auto to the 19 manual and reverse gearing in this thing is a joke. I went camping and had to level out my truck for the rtt. I had a buddy put a piece of a log, maybe a quarter of it behind the front driver tire, I tried backing over and it almost stalled it, then gave more gas and less clutch causing the clutch to burn. Like christ. I've been driving stick sense I was 15yo, I am 33 now so I know how to drive stick. I guess I'll put it in 4lo for more torque next time.

My truck has a little. More weight from the setup I have, maybe that attributes to it, not sure though. I do still like my manual, just embarrassing reverse gear. It's not a fuel economy thing either.

 

With the not so tight turning radius, I sometimes back over end curbs in parking lots so that I don't have to swing wide or do an Austin Powers turn. I can get over them, no problem. I will attribute this to the TSB tune (04B13) and the accumulator delete. OVT is even better.

But yes, the reverse gearing is nothing to joke about. It is just sad.

 

Been that way with Toyotas across 1st - 3rd gens and probably even before then, reverse has always sucked. I have the same issue, doesn't help that Toyota puts such light clutches in these trucks that don't bite very well at all. I stalled mine 2 weekends ago trying to back onto 2 traction boards stacked on top of one another, to level out the RTT.

Putting it in 4lo usually guarantees this won't happen lol. As long as you're on dirt or just going straight backward.

Thanks! Did a dry run this weekend. Made sure the deep cycle battery worked with the fridge and other stuff plugged in. Figured out things needed and how I could organize stuff better. My little grill cooked breakfast for 13 people. Drunken good times.

I made the change to 255/85/16's recently as well, and man what a difference. I thought the manual was geared too low from the factory, but it is much better now with these tires. Both in acceleration (not actual speed, obviously it is slower, but the gears don't feel so short) and cruising at freeway speed.

 

Scored a new Core short shifter from a member. Installed today, this is a seriously sweet setup. Front to back and side to side movement is the perfect distance IMO. The first to second shift was a slight annoyance to me with the stock setup. Especially in traffic with the short first gear/wonky factory tune. No more, 1/2 is quick without abusing the transmission.
More noise is transmitted through the solid mounted stick, You can hear the syncros working and some gear whine
Some may consider this a drawback, if you’ve driven older manuals your used to it. Doesn’t bother me one bit.

Now I need to figure out how to mount my @7r41lbr34k3r shift knob.


Still using his Delrin boot ring and a couple of rubber grommets.
