Ok, this might have been covered but I didnt find it in a search..

    I have a 2006 Tacoma Double Cab 2wd Prerunner... I'm second owner. .
It has the factory tow package including the 7-way RV plug.

I currently tow an enclosed utility with it carrying stage lights... But am considering a light weight RV trailer (Starting to miss the trailer I had in the past when I had my 1-ton....)

Anyway, my question is, how much of the 'RV' plug is wired from the factory?
As far as the 12v charge line, and line for brakes...
My 1-ton (97 F350) was factory wired, I just had to get a pigtail adapter that went under the dash from the brake controller to the factory harness, and a fuse and relay for under the hood to make the charge line go live at the plug.

On my other truck (a 97 Gmc) we had to run all the wiring ourselves, the 7way only had the basic 4-function of a boat trailer wired from the factory...

I'm wondering which way Toyota leaned with their wiring on the 06 Tacoma.. .
Is there factory wiring that I just need to get factory parts to make go active and tie in a brake controller to? .

I haven't found anything in the manual, and the local dealership service department is a split decision on which way it would be...

I haven't taken the time to go under the back with a meter and see what lines are active and/or have wires connected to the pins in the plug, I just know the basic lt/rt/brake/tail/ground functions are there and working with my enclosed trailer, I just thought about this over the last 24hrs or so and thought I'd see if anyone else might know.
It'll be next weekend before I have the time to do any physical investigation on the truck itself...

    Thanks

If it has the tow package you do indeed have the harness for trailer brake controller under your dash. It’s located near the emergency brake.

You'll just need the pigtail for the trailer brake controller, the charge wire and relay are already there if you have the factory towing package. The plug where you connect the brake controller is "T7" and is by the kick panel on the drivers side. I have attached the schematic and the locations as described.

    Thats great! Thanks!

As far as I know the original owner did the tow package, it has the big receiver, the 7way, and the dealer listed it as an option on the window sticker when it was on the used lot..

I'll check out under the dash this weekend!

    Thanks again guys!

That pig tail is a bear to find... it is way up there (at least my 2015 was). Drivers side kick panel needs to come out and you may need to unwrap some of the wiring bundle up there to get at the connector. Mine was on the back side of that mess of wires.

Which controller did you use? Also, did you have to cut out the back of the "CUBBY" or did you just drill a hole for the wiring or did you just route the wiring up and over the plastic insert(cubby)? Thanks in advance! Also, any have a part number/suggested supplier for the pigtail that goes between Tacoma harness plug and the brake controller? 2006 Tacoma. Every time I do some searching I end up with conflicting info. (I have the kickpanel connector and the Factory Round 7 Pin) I just need a simple controller(timed) versus proportional, for a small tent trailer.

I had to cut the 'cubby'... didn't like doing it either. Wires just run out the back. The unit is a Drawtite Activator #5100. I think I got it at NAPA. It should be plug and play. Hope this helps

Any help on the proper pigtail for a 2006 Tacoma? I'm going to call the dealer tomorrow and see what they say. I would almost guess that most Toyota's are the same, but who knows.

I don't remember what I had to do for the wiring-sorry. I can only assume that the wiring is the same as my 15. Dealer will know for sure.

I have a TeKonsha P3 brake controller. They sell the pigtail that connects directly from the controller to the truck. With the factory pigtail you’ll have to solder the wires to the brake controller pigtail. They sell the P3 one for like $10-15. I believe it was $10 extra when I bought mine packaged with the controller. But it will plug directly in on both sides. Saves some time from having to make the harness with the two regular pigtails.

Slightly unrelated question..but if I'm following those wiring diagrams correctly, there's a 30amp battery charging connections ready to go, ignition controlled, already wired on my truck?

As in I could splice into the black cable going into the 7 pin trailer connector and hook that up to a 2nd battery in the bed for inverter use?

Or am I reading the diagram wrong and you need the controller to get that going?

Correct, it's too charge a trailer battery for a breakaway system, winch, or RV trailer batteries, etc.
