Have a 2017 Sport and had a Viper remote start (DS4) installed when I bought it new. Everything has worked great for 2 years and the last month or so, after driving I have to hit the lock button like 15 times before it will lock (yes changed remote battery 4 times). Noticed that when the truck has sat without running, it locks just fine with 1 push. Went to Toyota and they say the remote start is telling the ECU that it is in accessory mode so that's why it won't lock. Went to remote start installer and they said remote start is fine. Any ideas, thoughts or experiences anyone has had with this problem?

Is it possibly your extra fob is inside the truck still?

I think it would normally make just one long beep without locking with another key fob inside.

I know with ADS interface, the way the data interface modules work on these trucks with the lock system there is a synchronization issue. However it should only effect the unlock. The way to bypass this is to hardwire the locks directly. I’d imagine Directed has the same problem interfacing as the truck is looking for the factory key fob. So I doubt that is the issue. The dealer could be correct about it going into accessory mode. Maybe they used a rearm output for the auto lights or something. Hard to tell what exactly they might have done as there are lots of ways to interface with different components that different installers may/may not do, whether it’s in an installation diagram or not.

Are you using the factory remote or after market remote when tying this? You may also not even have an aftermarket remote. You could try and isolate the remote start. Disconnect the power going to it. However if they hardwired the locks instead of running them through the CANBUS than you also might need to disconnect those. Possible something is shorted or backfeeding causing an issue. Again lots of potential things could be causing this. It would be best to have a 12v professional diagnose the issue.

Thanks @Lawfarin, I'm using the factory remote and always have. Don't even know if I got aftermarket remotes because I use my phone for remote start. A lot of what you said is above me, but thinking maybe I need them to uninstall the aftermarket remote start and see if that works. I do think Toyota may be correct that it is reading accessory mode because if I let it sit, it locks just fine with one push. Something is not shutting down after I turn the truck off after driving.

I have noticed a time or two after shutting my truck off that it seemed to stay in accessory mode. Not sure what actually happened but I did have to jump back in and cycle the ignition. It’s possible maybe you double tapped the button somehow or that something is up with the contacts. Perhaps you are having this same issue. Next time it happens stand by the truck and peek in the window and see what the display shows. I’ll have to do the same, I just assume it was something I did not paying attention. It hasn’t happened to me in a really long time.

check your remote start harness (if it's a t harness) or any taps for lose connectivity. Check both remote starters connectors and vehicle connectors interfacing to it (if t harness) for any crimps offset or not lined up with the rest. tug lightly on each wire (don't pull hard) to check if any have come free from the connector housing. Then unplug each connection on both vehicle and remote starter side and snap it back in looking for a click if possible, but not always necessary. If there are a bunch of taps, check each one by doing a continuity test with a voltmeter.

Update, here where it gets stranger. So took it to a specialist and he has narrowed this down to being a cargo/brake light I added. I added the Baja Design led rock lights as the 3rd brake light (3) with 2 white rock lights as the cargo. Wouldn't have believed him, however when you turn the switch on the dash for the cargo lights to off from the door function, everything works great. Turn it back to come on with door and problem is back. Baja Design has been responsive and they say it doesn't make sense that the lights function fine and cause this. Specialist feels that there is interference from the led lights that is causing a backfeed for the truck to think it's still in accessory before those lights shut off. He is going to dig deeper Friday and try to test the 3rd brake light with better wiring and wrapping. Makes no sense to me, but again he found the issue and proved it can be bypassed by shutting off the cargo light, so have to have faith he knows.
