I did not want to get into the MPG fight thread. so here is mine.

95.5 v6 4x4 MT door sticker code says 4.10 gears.

Putting on 31 10.5 15r c rated yokohama tires, no lift.

I think the odometer is close, as it was close on my 39 mile drive into work. I did not pay that much attention but it was close enough to say 3 miles or less. My speedo when compared to waze on flat ground holding steady is 6 mph high at 65 on the speedo. So my speedo might be closer with the new tires, might be off low who knows. Who cares?

As for MPG, I have no clue as I have only burned one tank of gas sense I bought it.

I do plan on using waze to track some mileage, just to get a base line. After the tires are on.

    I will post pics later.

What tires did it come with? 31s are the stock size for a 4x4, so you should be all good in the hood, there. A lot of people even run their 33's on 4.10's.

You probably won't see much of a difference on just a 39 mile drive. I suggest using a gps, and going for at least 100 miles and compare your GPS route mileage with the odo. And see how for, if any, it's off. The longer you go, the more the offset will appear.

I also suggest not getting too wrapped around the axle with calculating your mileage. You're not going to hypermile this thing, lol... Just get it "close enough" and periodically check to make sure you're not loosing mileage from a dirty MAF sensor or something...

the 95-97 4x4 came with 225/75-15? so was smaller diameter, but the gearing was also less for those ones. unless there was a different speedo gear in the trans for the 4.10/225 combo?

yeah not sure about the speedo gear - I would imagine since that's like an 8% increase in size they'd have different gearing, which I think is replaceable, isn't it?

yeah, i think all gens can have the gear changed, just cable vs electronic when it comes to type (and maybe auto vs man)?

Yes the tires on it are 225 75 15r.

I am not concerned about the MPG, I am concerned that the MPH is known.

I don't want tickets. If I know when it says 65, I am doing say 67 thats fine and can adapt so I avoid tickets.

I had an 86 turbo 4Runner with 32" BFGs. I knew the gauges read like 12% off or something. So if I was indicating 65, I was going roughly 72-73.

You just calculate the difference in diameter as a %. In your case, going form the ~28" tire to a ~31" tire is about an 8% increase, so indicating 65 you'd be going about 70.

In my Tacoma my speed is right about 10% less than what my speedo says
So if mine says 70 I'm only going about 62-63

at what speed? remember, it's a %, not an absolute #.

So it reads, say... 65 and you're actually doing 60?

If that's the case, it will likely be pretty damn close when you put the bigger tires on.

    Okay, report time.

Speedo is reading about 1 mph high at 55, which thrilled me. Power feels very similar, except steeper hills in 5th gear at 55 it wont pick up speed very quickly, I dont know if it did before either.

Second my odometer for the ride home said it was 39 miles, which is what it is. I guess it was off the whole time, the speedo was off about 9 or 10 %, and because of the reading on the way home the odo was too.

I guess now I can claim 9% lower milage..... so about 17k less than it has.... yeah right.

Tires, on and love them, looks so much better. funny thing is the door sticker for the tire pressures as 10.5r15 listed. I wonder of someone put smaller tires on it at some point.

Since you're so close to a good match right now, that seems entirely plausible.

I thought it was weird you were so off with the "stock" tires... I think there are even laws on the books that mandate how close your indicated speed needs to be, and surely it's less than 10%, probably only 1-2% off..

And the 5th gear at 55 thing sounds totally normal. You're probably only around 1800-2000 rpm at that speed I'm guessing. Power band doesn't really pick up until much later anyway, more like 3000+ You'll need to take the hill in 4th at least if you want to be able to accelerate.

55 mph was I think just under 2200 rpm, like the needle width away.

Some years ago, Honda got the daylights sued (read class action) out of them about speedo errors registering higher mileage than actual. The issue was the cars were going out of warranty faster than the actual miles the cars were seeing. I think a class action lawsuit suit was formed in California over that. In addition to the leaking V6 rear main seal lawsuit.
