    Hey all,

I have a 2013 Tacoma, 4ltr V6 base model automatic. Its got just shy of 180,000km on it. Recently had it into the mechanic for squealing. Has the S belt changed out and they also put in a new belt tensioner kit for the low price of $1200. The issue is the truck keeps squealing as soon as I reach 60+km/hr and continues to squeal for the whole day. The truck has been to the shop 4 times in the last two weeks under warranty and have had the belt replaced again but to no avail. This last time I took the truck in the mechanic told me that the noise is from the Transmission and I will need a new one soon! Has anyone else had to or heard of a transmission rebuild after 180k!? Am I just getting jerked around here?

have the U joints ever been greased or replaced. probably not, 20-30 bucks for proper spicer u joints for the rear shaft you would need 3. Easy to replace.

Cut & broke off stuff. Prolific ziptie and tape usage.
I agree. Try new ujoints and maybe the middle support bearing on driveshaft since you'd have the shaft off anyway.

176k on mine and its great but I have been diligent with servicing my transmission. I also keep up with greasing the u joints. Good luck.

One good way to figure out if its idlers or u joints. Get to the point where it constantly squeals. put it in neutral and let off the gas, does the sound go away? does it come back if you gas it (rev the engine while moving at speed while in neutral).

Essentially figure out whether its engine RPM related or rear driveshaft rpm related.

The mechanic ruled out the alternator, power steering pump, air conditioner compressor and anything else driven by or contacted by the serpentine belt? At your mileage any one or combination of these could be at fault.

My good friend had an issue with a squeal at certain speeds and it ended up being the carrier bearing.

Does your transmission shift hard or anything? Any symptoms other than a squeal? I’m barely what you might call a shade tree mechanic but I would think if the transmission needs rebuilt there would be more going on than a squeal.

    Maybe get a second opinion?

I like the idea of a second opinion as well .
Something fishy here ? $1200 bucks and the noise is still there with all the work being performed at the front of the engine ...not once but 3 times ?
Perhaps a video when you hear the sound may help us help you . Can you post up a video when you hear the sound ?
Very very unusual for a transmission to squeal .

Yes I'm going to have a second opinion this week. I'll try and record the sound and put it up and maybe that would help you all understand better the issue. Thank you all for the advice! Super helpful!

I don't know what the problem is, but it doesn't sound like a transmission to me. Your OP is confusing

Is it 180,000 km or 180,000 miles. If kilometers then something is ain't right. You shouldn't be having many issues at all. Me think it is time to change mechanics instead of parts.

I’m thinking idler pulleys as well. The advice to rev it in neutral is good - see if the squealing changes. $1200 seems pretty high for a serpentine belt and tensioner, especially since this mechanic can’t seem to figure it out. Good luck!

I tried this on the way home from work. When the squealing was at its worst I put it in neutral and let off the gas. It didn't sound like there was any change at all. Same thing when I rev the engine. No change at all.
It does however change tone as the truck changes gears, but just slightly.
