    Hello all!

This last week I noticed that my heat wasn't working. Popped the hood and noticed coolant was empty. Filled it up, heat started working and all was fine.
Day later, decided to have a peek again and noticed that the coolant level had dropped significantly. Going from full to low in a day of driving(only 15 miles or so).

Wife took it down to the shop that does our oil change and priced out the repair. I wasn't there so not really sure what all needs to be done.

Attached is the itemized quote. Could anyone fill me in on what the repair actually is? She said they said it was primarily the transmission cooler. Does that ring and bells?

    Thanks in advance!

If you want to, you should contact the service rep that your wife spoke to. They'd probably be able to tell you exactly what they found.

But I find that quote written on a blank piece of paper kind of unprofessional. The want you to spend over $1,200, and they couldn't even give you a proper itemized list with parts etc?

What year, model is the truck? What's on the odometer? Original owner...2nd...3rd?
Do you hear a gurgling sound in the dash? Does it run rough for a few seconds in the morning when you first start it?
If it's an 05,06 with over a 100k it could be a head gasket, sad to say.

    BTW, welcome. :hattip:

    Too few to list.
I don't think the transmission cooler has anything to do with your coolant disappearing. I wouldn't get any work done without at least getting a coolant system pressure test or a leak down test. Unless the radiator is visibly leaking and they know exactly where the coolant is going, I think they're just throwing parts at it. Take it to a different mechanic.

Are you losing coolant externally? Or is it just disappearing into thin air.

Everything about that is way too vague. I see by 1 of your other posts that you have an '06 with a 4 cylinder with 200K miles on it. You need to find out EXACTLY where the coolant is going. You also posted a year ago ago that you had a transmission problem. What ever became of that?

also its very possible that even though you topped off coolant there was still air in the system, which is why it showed low after a little running.

That’s pretty ghetto writing a quote on a regular piece of paper.... also, not to sound sexist but mechanics generally charge women more money due to the lack of knowledge. I always go to the mechanic with my sisters and mom so they don’t overcharge them since ill call them out on their BS

Yep. They rely on the vast majority of people being unable to even know how to check their tire pressure or air filter.
Unfortunately most people are easy pickings.

OP only stuck around for 3 minutes. He probably checked the available credit on his Visa card and told them to go ahead and do it.

I am having a similar issue. I just had the frame replaced about two months ago and its been losing coolant ever since. Are the 06 models known for this and gasket issues?
Could it just be the feeds since its sr5? BTW thanks

Estimate and what they want to do is completely sketchy in every way possible. Don't let Jimmy's loob shop touch your truck. Good mechanics are out there, find one.

    1,024.95‬ is the total. Not $1,030. Maybe that's a $5.05 penmanship fee.

And if the total after tax is $1,240 then you have 20 PERCENT sales tax and should flee your city/state immediately.

Question of the day is, did they find massive amount of coolant in the transmission fluid?

@3roguen the head gasket is a known issue for 05&06.

    This^^^

Plus, I know there is no external filter for the autos. The only "filter" that I am aware of is an internal metal screen. Not easily accessible nor likely to have on hand. That would mean removing the pan and having to re-silicone it back on.

Not even scrutinizing further, there are a lot of red flags.

Every other cost ends in zero's, except the first. Too much fuzzy math.
