I've heard that regearing is very important but I have little knowledge about what I should be looking into for my truck. I have 285 75 17r tires, a blower and 4wd) can anyone tell me what gear ratio I should run or what I might run into with stock gearing?

Most guys that re-gear go with either 4.55 or 4.88. A lot of it comes down to your end goal and how you plan on using the truck. I have 4.55’s and am happy with them.

www.grimreaper.com has an awesone gear calculator sorry, link sucks-no good. Try grimjeeper.com. Just drive around at different rpms and pick out the rpms you want to run at for what you want to do. I used this for my Cherokee and it was right to the gnats ass when all set up.

4.56 is what fits in the 3.73 gear housing. 4.56 or 4.88

I ran stock gears with my 285’s, supercharger, and armor. I like it. Got reasonable mileage and good performance. Once I started in with 295’s I started thinking about regearing. When I hit 315’s it was game over. Could not hold overdrive on the freeway, was dog slow and in general, it was way outta wack. I regeared with 4:88’s and with 315’s I think I’m a little over geared. Performance is fantastic, but mileage isn’t great. If I did it over, I’d get 4:56’s.

I regeared with ZUK and that was a great experience. He cryo’d my gears and pinions. I was looking for any and all opportunities to enhance the strength of the gears. So far, so good. Here’s his write up on my gears.
