Hello! I was hoping to dig into the wealth of knowledge here for some advice on my first Tacoma. I recently sold my ‘82 Volkswagen westfalia that I’ve been living out of and traveling in for the last few years. I’m looking to get a Tacoma for the 4x4 and versatility and to upgrade to a vehicle that’s not 37 years old.
I have a few questions that I’m sire you guys will be able to help with.
First , I’m seeing a lot of 2008-2010 models. I’m not sure if that’s just the years that are selling more because of the times and miles or if there are issues to look for with them?
The few I’m looking at are 2008, 2009, and 2010
I want a crew cab long bed for the space. I’m going to put a camper or a tall shell on the back to build it out for camping / living out of.
So are there issues to look for with 2008-2010 years that are over 100,000 miles?
When I go to look at them, what are some things that Brake or fail after 100k?
I’ve done a fair bit of work on a buddies 2002 taco, so I feel pretty comfortable with them and I am pretty hands on mechanical. I usually do all my own auto work.
The ones I’m looking at are a 2009 crew cab long bed. 111,000 miles for $16k
A 2010 crew cab long bed with 160,000 miles for 17k
    And a 2007 with 120,000 miles for 17k

Thanks in advance! I look forward to learning all I can here and hopefully contributing in the near future!

You would be better off buying a full size truck if you are going to live out of it.Tacomas are way to small for that purpose.

Well. I lived out of a Subaru Outback for a year.... and i know a few buddies that live out of their Tacoma’s... granted, some people’s idea of living out of a vehicle is different than others. I live in the mountains and have national forest as my backyard. It’s pretty simple living out of vehicles once you sacrifice the creature comforts and luxury of “normal” living. I wouldn’t trade it for a fancy home.
I think I’ve made my decision on a Tacoma. I’ve found a few slide in campers that will be more than enough room for me. And until I find a 4x4 van i want , this is my next move :)

Im just curious on things to look out for when purchasing one of these 2nd gens .

True, lots of people are without homes these days, and some day many people will be homeless.Just thought it would be easier with a full size truck.
