I’m assuming I have very little, if any at all, transmission fluid in the trans... if I refill it, get it warmed up, then check the fluid level (by letting the excess drain out of the overflow plug) will that be sufficient enough until I can get it checked by a pro?

Why am I bringing it up the temp? I’m not that confident in my work (propbably from this problem) enough to try and get my truck into temp mode

Do not drive the truck at all. The tranny is a fancy hydraulic pump and needs fluid to work. It's a decent sign it drove some so I'm guessing you kept 1-2 quarts in the torque converter and spun it out when it started to slip.

I'd drop the tranny pan and do a filter change while you are there

Reminds me of the time I forgot to put the drain plug back in and poured 5 qts of oil straight through the motor. Told myself it was an “oil flush and fill” afterwards. :anonymous:

The transmission fluid expands & contracts with temperature. The overflow is “calibrated” for the (from memory 115-130 F ?) temperature.

Where are you located? Maybe a “Good Samaritan” is close.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I went and bought 6 qts of atf ws and put 4 in the transmission. I’m idiling the truck now to bring it up to temp.

    A few notes:
    1. I did two separate drains of the transmission. The first I didn’t notice how much drained out. The second I got about 1.5 L out.
    2. After I dumped 4 q in the trans I opened the overflow plug and brand new transmission fluid poured out in a steady stream and I collected a little over 1 quart.
    3. I’m planning on opening the overflow again once I idle the truck for 20 minutes.
    4. I scheduled an appt for tomorrow morning less than a mile away so a pro can do a once over for me because obviously I’m not as skilled as I thought.

Any thing else I should be doing?

You're removing the check plug with the engine running, right?

I let it run for 20 minutes and pulled the check plug and nothing came out. I’m letting it cool down so I can add more. Once I add more you’re saying I should let it run again then check the overflow once more?

    Yeah.
Don't open the overflow unless it is running and up to temp. You can pump more in while it is running and at temp, just leave the fill plug hand tight. Once you stop the engine, fluid drains back into the pan, so some should always come out the overflow if it isn't running. It's easier to overfill a little, though, and let it drain to a trickle (while running and at temp) rather than adding.
