Gear oil question

I’m planning on doing the ECGS bushing swap this weekend along with the front diff and t case oil change. I had my gf buy the oil at Napa, since she works there, and she brought me this:


I just want to make sure this is correct. The “limited slip” is throwing me off. Am I good or do I need to exchange it?

 

Probably going to grenade your differential. Kidding. Pretty sure it won't hurt anything. LS gear oil just has friction modifiers in it. When it doubt, drain it out. (Or return it and just go Lucas or Mobil 1)

 

The limited slip part shouldn't matter. However, GL-4, GL-5, etc., does matter, and I can't see that in your pic, must be on the back of the bottle. Stick with what Toyota recommends in the owner's manual. I assume the oil in your pic has the limited slip additive already in it? Limited slip additive is okay in a non limited slip differential. Non limited slip is not okay in a clutch type limited slip differential. Don't put limited slip in a manual transmission, though.

Front diff isn't picky. That'll work but the friction modifier flavor isn't necessary. It won't hurt anything though.
GL4 versus GL5 is only important when using in a manual transmission with certain synchronizers, as I understand it.

 

Definitely check your owner's manual, but I'm pretty sure that you should only use GL-5 in modern differentials, and not GL-4. Yes, the wrong oil could cause gear failure.

 

As others stated no problem with LS modifier in Tacoma differentials. It’s good quality oil.

 

That's exactly what I used in my front diff; I'm pretty sure when it seized 300 miles later that gear oil had nothing to do with it. I'm kidding. I used it for both front and rear diffs(I have limited slip rear diff) with zero issues. IIRC I couldn't find anything WITHOUT that additive on the NAPA shelves at the time.

 

I’ll go against the popular option here and say that I wouldn’t use anything with friction modifiers in the t-case. Wyatt at RockSolidToys did a tear down of a t-case that only used gear oil with F.M.’s and it had a ton of build up instead from the additives. Granted, I think the t-case was still ok, but still makes me second guess using anything with F.M.’s.

 

So the back says GL-4/5 and it does not say anything about LS additive. So I think this is good to go?

 

That should work just fine, provided that's what your owner's manual calls for in the front diff, and transfer. Also, I looked this up on Valvoline's website, and it does contain the LS additive, which won't hurt anything for your use, you don't need LS oil, but it won't hurt anything. Just don't use it in a synchromesh manual transmission. The LS additive will affect synchro action, it's too slick for that. Your transfer doesn't have any synchros, so it should be fine if Toyota specs GL-4/GL-5,
