New here, just got back from the local Toyota Dealer for the 2018 Millimeter Wave Radar Sensor recall/repair. I have an Avid bumper which lowers the sensor and the radar works fine but nonetheless I took her in and they refused to work on the truck due to the aftermarket grill. Just a heads up.

Wait... so only the mesh on the grill has been modified and they told you they wouldnt work on your truck?? If so then that is BS! Did they give you a reason other than its not OEM??

Since it has been modified the dealer cannot perform the recall due to liability issues. Now you can put it back to stock then they can perform the recall.

I took mine in as well, they had to order the part. But to be honest I wish these trucks did not have all this safety crap on them...

Gone are the days of being able to modify your vehicle and being able to get manufacturers to fix factory issues. Toyota issued a letter stating that any modifications makes their resposibility to repair null. This includes lift, larger tires, grill guards, even OEM grills which are of a different trim level. And you can be sure they tag any modified vehicle in their system for future denials.

Yeah this is my first Tacoma, they make you feel punished for putting any pride or love into something that you own and represent for them. Even if they are other model OEM trim pieces like the grill etc. They refused to even check my transmission fluid unless I complain so they can warranty it. Put a Fkn stick in it that costs what 5 bucks and all headaches solved.

    Sorry rant over haha

Long time lurker, just signed up. But I am running into the exact same problem with the dealership on a chinese TRD pro grill. They let me leave the dealership with a potentially defective radar sensor, and told me to reinstall the old grill. Which I find is a little ironic when it comes to Toyotas opinions on driver safety. They sent a follow up phone call if I wasnt satisfied with the service appointment. If they still wont perform the repair on the grill that's installed, I'll ask them to put on the other grill for me and see what they say. The thought of spending an afternoon taking off the new grill, replacing with the old, only to put the new grill back on after the fix is done makes me a little annoyed.
