Service Intervals

I always look thru the manual of any new vehicle and figure out the maintenance intervals for service items. And I keep track of everything in a spreadsheet: date, mileage, service, who did it, cost, recommendations, etc. That way there is no confusion (that happened once, when I paid for transmission service two oil changes in a row; fortunately I had the paper to prove it and got my money back on #2). And I keep every scrap of paper, so I have proof for warranty coverage.

With my new 2019 Taco I noticed that there is a lot of "inspect and replace as recommended by dealer". That's a little ambiguous. It's a bit like asking a barber if you need a haircut. I prefer Schedule A or Schedule B mileage and time recommendations. Other than plugs, coolant and transmission there are no hard recommendations for a few things. And the coolant and transmission intervals are way too long, IMHO, especially living in the desert.

This is my first 4WD. Is the transfer case separate from the transmission with its own service recommendation? And differentials? What about them? Any recommendations for service intervals are appreciated.

I've read the guide cover to cover. It is filled with "inspect and replace as recommended by dealer".

 

OK, I have a 2018 and on Page 41 (30,000 mile service) down in the severe service section at the bottom it lists replacing the transfer case oil and the diff oil (both).

I didn't bother to read out any further (since I just now have 30,600 miles) but I'll bet those services are required (at the top of the page) at the 60,000 mile or maybe 75,000 intervals.

 

OK, I stand corrected. Here in AZ we're dusty. And yup, it repeats at 60K for dusty conditions.

 

Toyota knew they'd catch a lot of fish for their dealers when they wrote that statement.
