Reclaim the bed storage compartment in your 2019 Taco for $35

Most of you are aware they removed the driver's side storage cubby hole in the 2019 Taco bed.


I, for one, miss it. It was a great place to stash tie-downs and bungie cords etc. When you look under the bed side, you see there's plenty of open space to mount something. And it would be a damn shame to let all that space go to waste. And you can never have too much storage. Right?


Luckily, I found an alternative. It's listed as a replacement glove box for boats. But the size is also perfect for mounting into the driver's side of the bed. It's not flush with the side like the original (sticks out about an inch), but it is lockable. The inside measures 12"x4"x6.5". This one costs $35 on Amazon.

Another one seems exactly the same except the door has more rounded corners.

Installation was pretty straight forward. Layout the cut


Cut the hole (I used a 24 tooth hacksaw blade)


Gather up your fasteners. I used 8-32 3/4" bolts. 4 with lock nuts and lock washers at the corners and 2 for the holes in the top center.


Position the box and drill the 4 corner holes (11/64?). Optionally, put a small bead of silicone caulk around the box flange. Mount the box with the 4 corner bolts and lock nuts/washers (you'll need help here). Finally, insert 2 bolts in the top center holes. I drilled/tapped/Loctited them into the liner. Maybe you can think of a better way.


I realize there's many ways to skin a cat (I prefer pliers). So there's probably easier/better ways to mount this bugger. One thing I would change, instead of centering the box vertically, I would probably mount the box a little lower so the door rests on the bed floor when you open it. Hanging in mid air like that is just begging to get busted. And keep in mind that the door is just plastic. So if you haul a lot of heavy loads, like firewood or scrap metal, you'll want to protect the door somehow. Or, depending on your needs, you may want to remove the door altogether.

Well, the cubby box on my 2017 doesn't have a lock on it, so I don't put anything in there. Plus, being in the desert southwest, it would get too dusty and too hot in there for most anything, IMO. I just keep all my bungees, tie straps, and rail clips underneath the backseat.

 

Ya, to go along with the 7 in the front and 6 in the back I already have, lol.

 

I keep ratchet straps, paracord and softeners in one side and jumper cables in the other. Tools and tow straps under the back seats and spare clothes, first aid, and some camping necessities behind the seats.

Looks good. Once you get some snow and ice in the bed, you might be happy that you didn’t mount it lower.

 

Good point! Also seems like running weather strip around the door would go a long way to making less dusty inside.

Great job op! If the cubby part is plastic looks like you could cut off whatever is needed from the back part, plastic weld it back on so that it is less deep and then it would fit flush.

 

I don't understand why they did away with this. I use mine constantly.
