I wanted a higher output Alternator for my 2003 Tacoma. I put in a DC power engineeringalternator, but I have had issues with the bracket breaking as it has with others. I had the last bracket reinforced but it broke also. Anyone have an alternator they are happy with? Maybe something 140 amps or so. You can see the reinforcement to the bracket and how it broke.

Those breakages seem to be from over torquing the bolts.

The thread I linked to has several options. A popular one seems to be a 140 amp Cadillac alternator (on the cheap option), but there is a little bit of wiring that needs to be done to convert it. Mean Green is the other one that people seem to like ($400).

Have you done the Big 3 upgrade yet?

Yes I have re done the wiring and I have a battery manager. Hmm so over tightening the bolts might have done it? The performance of the DC power engineering is excellent I am just frustrated with the broken brackets.

I’ve been running their 270 amp version from DC and never had an issue. Eight years later still a solid unit that hasn’t skipped a beat. I’ve never broke a bracket knock on wood. Are you using a 1/2 in torque wrench to tighten? I noticed the op’s alt case is a little different than mine. Maybe the new case is the issue.

Looks like a different pulley than mine, mine is waay smaller and says DC Power on it, must be for pulling more amps at idle. I don’t have the second hole on my alt case either, I wonder why they changed it from mine maybe they are buying billet aluminum that may be cheaper and that would cause it to crack if it was any softer. About six months in it shit a pulley!, the anodizing wore off and let my belt rip right off, it’s been fine since I replaced the pulley, but the alt needs tightened after it gets a new belt broke in or it will slip. I love the extra amps but if this alt takes a shit I am going to get an irragi alt, my friend uses them and really runs 10,000 watts hard. This won’t get too far hopefully, but I only paid 500 cash for it new but had to go to Riverside to pick it up, they charge a fortune to buy a 270amp online. I had them dyno my alt for reassurance as I need to see it or it didn’t happen, wound up putting out 300+ amps. If I try calling them it’s usually a no answer situation so I don’t put too much trust in the company their alts look nice and put out but all I hear is bad news. My Subaru has one and the mount isn’t correct and they wouldn’t address it two weeks in, so whatever, it’s working great but isn’t of my standard with their shitty mount.

I talked with Mean Green today they wanted to see photos so I sent them. They called me back and said that spacer is the likely problem. Said DC Eng should weld a larger triangular piece on to reduce the strain and remove the spacer, Mean Greens mounts flush. He said I could sell you an alternator, but they should fix this one. I appreciated his honesty.

    That’s good business there!
