Would you give your opinion on what's happening with my hood paint, and what you would do about it?

For background, this is a 2016 TRD Sport I purchased used 2 years ago. Started with 12k miles, now has 36k miles. The issue started as a large 'bubble', maybe just a millimeter in height, but a pretty good size. After a month or two a piece flaked off. Now it just gets larger and larger.

I don't know what caused it, but I suspect some sort of unknown impact.

What do I do? Body shop? Replace it? I'd prefer to do the least expensive option while keeping it respectable looking.

    Thanks for your help.

Looks like bondo or other filler material underneath the paint, so some repair work was done to the hood at some point. You will need to go talk to a body shop and have them look at the the rest of the truck and see what else might have been repaired..

    that is not oem paint

that truck has had some type of f**kery done to it and ....this is evidence of a bad job of hiding the f**kery

can't bondo hoods they flex way too much....you can bondo pretty much anything else and never know, but the hoods flex a ton.

that thing has been in some type of incident...hail or crash or something

Shit OP that is terrible, sorry to see. I'd def take it to a couple body shops to get some estimates, have them look over the whole truck as Swiss said. Then go from there in regards to possibly replacing it.

Post #2 I believe hit the nail on the head. I would be looking for more hidden damage. In the mean time I would start looking for a new hood. We're there any declarations on the truck when you bought it?

No declarations of damage. I took one more photo because I think the first ones came out a little 'yellow'. I hadn't considered bondo because it looks like 'mostly' metal to me. But I am no expert. I appreciate the advice and I'll go have it looked at.

Take a good magnet with large diameter. Sweep the whole truck with it. Magnet will stick over sheet metal+primer+paint but NOT over bondo. Might find other places.

Not easily. It's down under that flange too far. Pretty much where you see the wiper fluid hose going back, but too far to see.

Sheesh, I really need to wash it don't I?

depends how caked on the body filler is, half my box side is bondo and I can still stick a magnet to it.

That's bondo alright. I'd take a small magnet and see how far out it goes. Be careful and make sure the magnet is clean or you'll put scratches due to any small metal frags on the magnet.
Now that your looking at it with a more critical eye, does it look like the whole hood was painted? Front fenders...? Hopefully it was a localized dent or something.

That truck's been painted alright. Got to remove that cheese and see what's going on under there. My guess is misshapen metal (from some sort of impact) so they filled it, primed it and painted it. Always, always ask to have pre-owned cars metered with a paint meter! The dealer may say they don't have one but they are full of shit. Every used car manager has one.

paint meter gives a whole story about the vehicle and reveals any BS about paintwork/damage/restoration for sure.

That's bondo,I would be pissed if the seller never mentioned the truck had been wrecked/repaired.

I appreciate all the help. The first body shop I went to took one look and said, "REPLACE!". The thought was that chasing all that bondo down would result in more labor costs than it's worth.

So, how hard would that to do myself? I am pretty good at bolt swapping and YouTube watching, my concern is matching the paint. Can I get an OEM hood from Toyota already painted? I wonder what I'm not considering. Basically, what would you do? The first estimate came in at $1,200.

I'll call the parts dept. at the dealer, but they aren't open just yet. . .
