Just go to one of those self service car washes, put a few bucks in and use the high powered hose they have to spray the frame and underside real good. Try not to blast any of your o2 sensors if they're exposed though.

Did the truck actually get wet with sea water?

If no, then you have nothing to worry about.

Spending time in Key West I checked out every 1st Gen I come across. I noted zero frame rust. Every vehicle in key West is in sight of the ocean.

Ask me about sun damaged paint. the sun beats the shit out the paints bad.

 

I actually drove on the surf in Pismo and my truck faced the ocean the entire night, so I washed the hell out of the frame when I got home.

Better safe that sorry I guess. Doesn’t hurt to wash the frame.

 

The sun is making my trucks paint faded especially since it red lol and no it has never been in the water it just been parked by it

Do you have a pressure washer to run it? Notice there is 4 nozzles. Each nozzle will only put out 1000 psi because you divide your output by 4. 1000 psi out of a pressure washer is pretty anemic.

Cleaning units are defined by multiplying volume by pressure. Pressure washers do not put out much volume, but do put out lots of pressure.

You can find out your cleaning units for just a plain lawn sprinkler using this formula. I bet you will find out that the calculations are very similar.

With that above ramblings, my opinion is you can do the same amount or cleaning using a lawn sprinkler placed under the truck. In addition, you don't have to constantly move the pressure washer device around.

The lawn sprinkler only needs to be moved every 5-10 minutes to make sure the entire frame is washed.

I like that I can walk away from the truck and get some other things done while the frame gets a good washing down.

 

what are your thoughts on using the sprinkler underneath to remove any old/aged/brittle rubbery undercoatings before spraying new undercoating?

 

Most likely you will be disappointed.

Nothing beats going after it with an air powered needle scaler. It's quite amazing how well that tool works!

 

it would be too much area to remove it all with that tool underneath on my shoulder with one free hand, its sprayed all underneath the cab and the bed
i'm just looking to remove any loose pieces (which honestly i did NOT notice anything loose checking underneath the last time before spraying a FF type coating to darken it up)
trying this before i rubbercoat soundproof spray it again with maybe thicker stuff and make my truck as quiet as a mouse on the road
i am assuming this new spray coating will adhere to the 23 year old stuff without flaking/peeling off but not sure yet if all the old stuff must be removed first

 

If you are not in the salt belt, the rubberized undercoating is ok. Around here, that stuff is taboo. It traps water/salt and promotes premature rust thru. No one around here likes the rubberized undercoating.

Your on your own if using that stuff.

 

My truck has been parked by the beach for 15 years, just have a normal car wash schedule and you will be fine. Don't over react.
