So, I've been noticing puffs of blue smoke out my exhaust on startup here and there over the last couple of months. Called dealer the first time I noticed and they of course said, "nothing to worry about" and to "get a video of it":frusty:

Fast forward a few months later. Not able to make my 24k service due to working out of town they asked me to check my fluids etc.

My dipstick is reading over full. Yes, Wiped and checked multiple times.
While I realize I should have checked my oil more often, I always tell myself to do it and then I forget.

They are telling me its not a problem, and will not cause issues. Yet they want me in ASAP to drain the excess oil. This is after roughly 11,000km and at least 15-20 times noticing these blue puffs on start up. I don't look out my mirror every time I fire up my truck.

I feel it was more full than the dipstick shows post oil change at 16,000km due to the puffs of blue "burning" it off.

This is my second tacoma in 3 yrs. I put 60,000km on my 2016 and never once noticed a blue puff of smoke out the exhaust. Currently at 26,000km

    What are your thoughts?

Wow man, that really sucks. Overfilling engine with oil is way worse then underfilling, not sure if i would feel comfortable keeping that engine in the long run.

Which dealership did you go to? Was it new west toyota by any chance? Ha

Drain the oil and pour it into gallon or 5Qt jugs and measure how much came out. If over 7-8qts I’d be concerned.

My thought is do your due diligence and pop your hood once a week to “check things out”

Better initial/mark the filters too to make sure they even change them!

Yeah, manual says 6.2 quarts for the 3.5L V6. I’d personally drain it and refill. Hassle but worth it.

Agree but then dealer could deny anything wrong on their part because you messed with it.

(if something went wrong because of too much oil, in the future)

Fire that dealer. Get new one, ask for free rental while they document and fix the issue. Don’t do it yourself so they are liable for their mistake.

Have it towed back to dealer ! Have them check the dipstick with you standing there with them. Let them respond. The longer you wait the more damage could occur! Its on the dealer to step up and take care of there fuck up, if they refuse start calls to corporate! GET DOCUMENTATION ON EVERYTHING!

Sell that truck. Don't ever let the dealer change your oil. Good luck with that motor.

Gotta get in the habit of checking your oil on a regular basis. Every week for me.

First off, if they overfilled, it's possible they didn't drain the oil on the previous service at 16k km. I'd guess they just filled on top of the original oil from the factory. I'd insist on a complete change and not just a drain.

Second, you are partially at blame. You knew blue smoke wasn't normal, and you didn't check the fluids regularly. It's a bit crazy to check oil every fill-up, but it's not unreasonable at all to check it every month or so. I'd take this as a learning experience there. The dealer is still 100% to blame - you shouldn't be on the hook for this.

Blue smoke means oil was getting into the cylinders. That's bad normally, but REALLY bad if it's from overfill. That's a LOT of oil overfilled if it was high enough to seep past the piston rings when you stopped. I'd want the engine compression tested, I'd want them to check the EGR system to see if it's gummed with oil, I'd want new spark plugs, etc. Even then if it all came back normal, there's no way to know the engine was correctly lubricated when it was overfilled. There could be underlying damage you won't notice until a component fails 20k km later, when you're out of warranty.

Probably getting sucked up thru the PCV valve and burnt in the engine...good thing you still got port injection to keep the valves clean.

It's threads like these that make me want to tell people that dealers are not the end all be all of Toyota knowledge and expertise. If you are under warranty, or get free oil changes and maintenance, yes, use the dealer, but CHECK THEIR WORK. Do it in the parking lot of the dealer once they're done. Let them see you checking their work. Ask them to tell you exactly what was done. Check your fluids, look at the part(s) they installed/fixed. Read up on the mechanics. Hold them accountable.

Educate yourself on how to maintain and fix your truck.
Learn to get the self-satisfaction that comes from doing the work yourself.
Personally I have to struggle not to look for things to fix on my truck that aren't broken because I love keeping it in the best condition possible. It's fun for me.
If you're on this site, you love your truck. If you love your truck, do the work yourself (when applicable - I don't expect the average Joe to perform a tranny overhaul, engine rebuild, etc).

The hands of a knowledgeable truck owner are the best hands doing the work.

Final Note: If a job is outside of your expertise and comfort, yes, take it to the dealer or a shop, but still read up on the procedure and/or parts and fluids so you can check the dealer/shop's work and hold them accountable.

6 quarts is plenty. There will be some oil left in the engine after you drain it so no need to worry about adding .2 in oil.
