I got to spend the weekend at black mountain wheeling. Here’s my completely unscientific crawlbox review / trip report / rambling about my truck.

On the crawler... wow! I’m am mind boggled. It’s a whole new world. All the traction, all the control, none of the bashing and banging on your truck. I wouldn’t say that’s it’s something everyone needs by any means. It was a LOT of work and money. 11/10 would recommend if your goal is to play in the big rocks rather than ride easy to moderately difficult trails. I would do it again starting today now that I’ve experienced it.

We ran white tail crawl, lower rock garden, rail bed, and fish fossil. The truck did awesome. Obviously, it struggled when belly height was key compared to the 37-40” tire clad monsters I was with. Being skinny paid off, as usual, in many places. The winch took care of the all the places I couldn’t make. I was very pumped to run the entirety of lower rock garden and all but about three feet of white tail winch free! Rail bed gave me fits because it was so wet, but I made it!

I popped a cv winching out the exit of fish fossil. It was a bad spot and 100% preventable. I was trying to drive and winch with the truck laid over pretty hard. I felt it binding up, but Had so much going on I didn’t process it fast enough to make the decision to stop. Haha. Then boom. Turned out to be a good thing though because Levi taught me the super awesome and fast method of changing the axle without having to remove the inner from the diff. So fast and no diff oil lost!

As far as the build goes, I feel like it’s where it needs to be for a good long while. I have a whole lot of wheeling to do! Will be needing tires soon. Kicking around a couple thoughts there. Have almost certainly decided against tubbing for 35s. I am curious about beadlocks and the 34ish” sizes. I think I could squeeze them in there. The 255 km2 has been so good for me though I’m not sure I could find something better.

    /End rambling.

Personal opinion here. I think the ONLY thing that can improve your truck right now is lower air pressures. That would've got you up that tiny section of white tail without the winch. Since you're on skinnys, that means beadlocks, but you did mention you didnt want to lose ground clearance either so the best solution to that is bias tires. Interco has some good options in skinnys, like 34x11 or similar... just my thoughts

Yea, I don’t think you’re wrong. I’m just not sure I’m willing to endure the TSL’s when I’m not on the trail.

They are super fun to watch though. On several occasions this weekend, I saw ONE of the giant TSL or rocker side lugs be the difference in making or missing an obstacle. Freaking paddles. Haha.

    Just to recap:

I ordered crawl box from Marlin.
Next day, you order crawlbox from TG.

You get crawlbox, get it completely installed, wheel with it.

I am still waiting on crawlbox from Marlin.

The 285/75/17 km2 is one of the ones catching my eye right now. Almost 34” tall.

If you do go that route, I would interested to see what all you'd need to do to get it to fit. I was also thinking of going with a 34" at most (but that's a long ways away)

It’s not much taller than the 255 km2. 33.86” vs 33.3”. I think I can beat the firewall back enough for that.

hmm, so a approx quarter of an inch of increased clearance? Not sure if it's worth it :notsure:

    Stuff. Also things.
I know you use your tires a little differently than I do, but this is the size that I’m seriously thinking about moving to after my 315s are done. I’m growing tired of the tire poke I’m getting and I’d only lose a shade over a quarter inch of ground clearance, which is not a huge deal for me.

AFAIK, @Deathbysnusnu was able to run them on his 1st Gen with some not so gentle persuasion, but he definitely didn’t have to tub.

That’s awesome about the crawl box, btw. Can’t wait to get mine in later this summer.
