Advice on getting sound back closer to stock (currently have 14" Magnaflow __)

Hi!

I bought this Tacoma post-exhaust work. At first the sound wasn't that bad. However, after going on a few road trips and trying to carry friends and family in the back seat, the noise both at idle/low speeds and on highways is a bit too much for peaceful drives and conversation.

Here are some pictures: https://imgur.com/a/YSbnY4V. I can't find the exact muffler that matches what's on there... but it is a 14" Magnaflow, measures approximately 6" round, the inlet is 3", the outlet is 2.5".

What would be a good mod to get it close to stock sounding? Would the Magnaflow 12286 do the job? https://www.magnaflow.com/products/...ight-through-centeroffset-performance-muffler

Or something else entirely?

 

if you're willing to spend some money and keep the muffler you could sound proof the cab. Personally Id just get a stock muffler and be done with it, my brothers truck has a magnaflow and the droning sound gets old

 

I don't have any desire, specifically, to keep the exhaust. I also feel a bit bad when camping and waking up at 4am and undoubtedly waking up the rest of the campsite.

A bit more expensive than the Magnaflow... but you think the 24" Magnaflow would still be loud?

 

I just bought a Bosal stock replacement exhaust for mine. It requires that you cut the pipe about 2 feet or so behind the donut gasket where the pipes converge and weld it on in that one spot. It was $100 at an auto parts store. I can find the part number if you'd like and post some pics.

 

Looks like that would fit too. More expensive than the option I posted above, but it would be a direct bolt on install and a bit better quality. Just confirm that you have the 127" wheelbase or whatever that part said and you should be good.

 

If you have the part number readily available, I'll def take a look. Happy with the results in terms of noise level / drone?

I like it, no drone and just a tad louder than stock I'd say. Sounds like a truck but still fairly quiet. I got this to replace a Flowmaster 50 on my 07 and had them add a flange with a gasket so I can swap the Flowmaster back on it if I want. EDIT: For some reason it said the $147 price tag online but when I went into the store and ordered it the total cost after tax was $116. Not sure why.

 

Called up a few shops in SF and interesting how varied the prices are. Golden Gate Auto = $250 parts + labor (but parts is not the magnaflow... not sure what it is, didn't dig). Cowden Automotive = $500+, was really apprehensive to give a quote. First because the exhaust might be rusted... showed pics. Then because other things could be causing exhaust noise like warped gaskets and whatnot. Also didn't seem receptive to me buying my own parts (which I understand is part of the profit margin of mechanics so I don't fault them necessarily).

Seems like prices will be all over the map.

And still need to decide which part. Decisions!

 

Post it on your local craigslist. Straight up swap with another taco owner, they get the custom exhaust, you get their stock.

I'd trade you my stock for your aftermarket but we're a little far from each other.

 

I can offer that I have a TRD CAI and a TRD Catback muffler. Sound level is not bad at all, even cruising at 75-85 mph on highway.

Yeah, 1,800 miles is a bit far! Guessing shipping this stuff doesn't make much sense.

Side note... any one know what the Magnaflow exhaust model is? No luck finding it and would love to know for when I post a swap offer.

 

I have a stock exhaust from my 2019 DCSB Off road that I willing to part with. Its most new only has about 2,500 miles on it.

 

Oh, and San Jose... sweet. I could definitely make that work!

Do you know if the 2019 DCSB TRDOR stock exhaust would fit my 2015 DCSB TRDOR? Trying to find some measurements and not having luck yet.

 

Had a magnaflow too that came with my truck.

Found an OEM catback for $10 and I have zero regrets going to stock.

 

$10 is a great find, everything I'm finding is the entire OEM exhaust for like $400.

 

I'm not sure, you can probably call a dealer to confirm.

Then I searched here, found your post, checked Autozone.com, and this weekend you can use a 20% off coupon if you ship to your home. $107 * .20 = $87 before tax. Smoking deal for a replacement muffler that can be installed without welding. Happy 4th of July!

 

I'm seeing it for $148, you see it for $107? Great deal if you can grab for $87. The autozone site also says it won't fit on my truck.. will check it out more.
