    Hello,

I've been trying to narrow down the best way to put a boat rack on my 3rd gen tacoma over my softopper. I've done a lot of searching on here and absolutely love the one by dissent offroad but I'm wondering what other lightweight options are recommended. I don't understand why other guys aren't modifying their racks to fit over a softopper or shell. I'm also wondering if anyone has ever modified one of the many thule/other manufacture ladder racks to fit over a softopper. I wish I was more skilled at fabricating because I feel it would be fairly easy to build a new base system that fit outside the bars of the softopper that would allow for the vertical posts of a thule tracrac or similar to fit. Additionally it would be awesome if the vertical posts were removable when the rack is not needed and then the softopper could still be operated up/down but the base plates could all stay in place. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'm looking at doing this exact same thing. I can weld steel but would like aluminum just to make it lighter to remove and not be subject to rust. Currently trying to see how I can adapt a Tracrac to a custom base with single bolt removal (per corner). I need to get a close look at the Tracrac base to see how it can be done. Might need to have someone weld up new base plates. I'll probably use a base design somewhat like this user:

And I agree that a softopper with this is about the most versatile but simple setups around and more racks should be made for this. I haul bikes, motos, kayaks, dogs and need quick flexibility.

That's a good option for some but for $1099 plus tax and shipping, I'll certainly be making my own or modifying one. I like the traditional Tracrac styling though since I don't plan on an RTT and 2 separate bars will be easier to remove. I need the rear bar more forward too so I can use the tailgate pad easier.
