Dont listen the auto haters in here, it is extremely over exaggerated, I've owned a 16, 17, and 19 auto, they were all fine with mind you the occasional power surge from a dead stop or lack there of that people reported, this was on the 16 and 17, but not my 19s. The TSB definately addressed the issue.

I own an auto trans and I believe it's getting a bad rap. I had TSB-0058 done at the 5,000 mile interval and let computer learn my driving habits. So far, this Tacoma is one of the best vehicles I've had the pleasure to own.

Exactly, I’ve owned a few. All gens and configs , the 3rd gen is and has been the best of the bunch, every gen had little nuances.

Since you are getting used, my advise would be to make sure it is completely stock. No mods since it's impossible to know if someone hacked stuff up.

Being new to Toyotas and Tacomas myself, this is what I’d look out for:
    1. Seating position. Still getting used to it. Seat is too close to the floor, the bottom cushion too flat and unsupportive, the steering wheel seems too far away
    2. Automatic transmission. This has to be the only automatic transmission in the world designed to work as a CVT. And a bad one at that.
    3. Vibrations. These bother some people more than others. They don’t bother me too much, but I can tell they are there: when I accelerate, when I brake, when I go slow or fast. I believe direct injection is part of the issue: I need to get the engine kicking and screaming to be able to do everyday things
Things I really like about my Tacoma:
    1. Assembly quality and overall feeling of solidity. This is what got me hooked during the test drives.
    2. A quiet, hushed operation - well, as long as I drive like granny...
    3. Quality of the JBL premium sound
    4. Strong resale - speaks for itself
    Good luck!
