If you just want a HAM for trail comms / or a good ol fashion QSO ragchew, might I suggest the Kenwood TM281 or the Yaesu 3100. They aren't fancy, or have a bunch of fancy features, but get the job done on 2m and have PLENTY of power to summon help from many miles away if need be.

I like the thought of portable. I'm done wiring junk all the time lol. Have a CB in the cab so I really don't want to throw $100+ on a ham as well.

In that case, I have an F8-HP which is an improved

$18 Baofeng UV5R BAOFENG UV-5R VHF/UHF Dual Band Radio 144-148MHz 420-450MHz Transceiver

Baofeng UV5R (edit: like you linked above). That thing continues to impress me with its range. The extended battery I have too makes it last for forever it seems to. I can lend it for a 3 day trip and it'll go the whole time without a recharge, with quite a bit of on the road BSing.

 

Also, Btech sells an APRS cable for it, so you can run APRSdroid to the baofeng and have a complete APRS setup for under $100 plus a handheld.

IDK why Amazon prices stuff like that. I was looking at pelican cases the other day and the black one was 259, the green one was 279, and the tan one was like 239. All the same price listed by Pelican. Must be a way to move one SKU over another I would guess.

Cody this is the handheld we are all using. Its the 8w version i mentioned in the text. If you can find one, get it, cause for a while they were on the fcc radar cause you can mod them to get on restricted frequencies
