Corgis are great! The x-GF had one here at the house for 3-4 years and it (Lucy) was a kick in the pants! Talk about personality! The dog would never stop moving, running laps up and down the hallway, forcing us to throw the ball, throw the ball, throw the ball... I miss that little dog.

    Hello Whatevers:hattip:

I'm having an insanely slow day at work today and thought I would drop in and read a story. @TacomaDave tells some good ones but I guess Dave's not here man.

Hows about I tell one? It won't be as good as Dave's but, eh, whatever.

Along about 1981 I bought a '76 Chevy pickup for a work truck. A plain-Jane white fleet truck with a 350 and auto tranny. I got it dirt cheap because it had a lot of miles on it, no discernible oil pressure and a rod knock. I drove it like that for a few months then bought a used engine at a junkyard and a friend and I swapped it in over a weekend.

The new engine ran great but they can always run better, right? First thing I did was pull off the perfectly good stock carburetor and slap on a Holley 'cause performance; yay. Truck didn't run a bit better but it did lose 2 or 3 mpg. The new carb had a manual choke which was ok but you had to get it set just exactly right or the rpms would be too low and it would die when you put it in gear, or too high rpms and the converter would stall when put in gear and, thump, truck would lurch and die. I got pretty good at setting it right but if I got in a hurry I would still kill it occasionally.

So after awhile the starter began too get a little weak; it would start just fine the first time but if I stalled it and hit the key again it might just click and refuse to turn over. Then I would have to hop out, slide underneath, reach in behind the exhaust manifold and use a screwdriver to short the terminals on the solenoid. Sure, I could have fixed it but, hey, priorities man; I bought a set of headers, pipes and glasspacks and installed them instead. Because race truck, performance! Woo-hoo! The truck didn't run any better but it sure was loud. The headers did allow me to reach over the fender to jump the starter though instead of crawling underneath.

So one day at work the boss says we all need to move our vehicles to make room for a semi delivering a piece of equipment. I was farthest away and the last to the lot so I jumped in, fired that mother up, slammed her into reverse and killed her. Hit the key, no start. I jumped out, ran around and bent over the passenger fender, stuck my screwdriver in there and she started right up. Unfortunately, in my haste I had neglected to shift the tranny from reverse back into park and jumping the solenoid bypasses the neutral safety switch so when it started it immediately took off across the parking lot with me hanging off the fender dragging my feet to try and stop it and, of course, all my coworkers and my boss watching. Luckily I had left the door open and the truck was moving slow enough I was able to run around, jump in and get it under control before it rolled across the lot and killed all my coworkers. They were all laughing so hard they would never have been able to get out of the way. I bought a new starter and installed it that evening.

Now had this happened a few weeks earlier while I still had the stock exhaust manifolds I would have been laying under the truck and behind the front wheel when it started and I likely wouldn't be here to tell the story on myself. Almost 40 years later and I still get a little chill thinking about it.
